"Notify me of followup comments via e-mail" - possible?

I just noticed a neat feature that a friend has on her blogspot blog. "Check here to be notified by e-mail when a new comment is posted". I am liking this feature and I'm wondering if there is something available here at WordPress or an outside source that I could use here. I have a lot of readers outside of WordPress and I would imagine that they would appreciate being able to choose to be notified when a comment is posted after theirs - hence the discussion forum style of commenting.

She uses HaloScan and I can't determine if it's usable here at WordPress or not.

    Thanks

  2. i don't think we can use haloscan and that feature isn't available here at the moment. however, you could recommend your readers to use comment tracking sites such as cocomment by putting a link in your blogroll.

Haloscan is not available here at word.press.com but your readers can subscribe to your rss feed for comments. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/23/put-your-feed-in-your-sidebar/

I really don't like the way the comments come through in the RSS. It seems that I don't know anyone who really does. When there are several messages that are being commented on at once, they are a pain in the neck to separate in RSS and it's not as easy to go back and read the original message or previous comments as it would be to simply go back to the blog itself. Besides, if a poster only really cares about one post and its comments, why would they want to subscribe to the RSS feed? I have had that feature available on my blog from the get-go and it doesn't seem that anyone really uses it.

    I'll look into cocomment next.

  5. I agree with the author of the entry. In fact, i've been waiting for WordPress to allow this option from the control panel for ages. Something like an option that lets the post author reply to a comment while also sending it directly to the comment maker's email, would also be great. Hope WordPress will take them into account!

  6. This is what we currently have available to us http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/11/how-can-i-offer-email-updates/

  7. It sounds as though what you want is exactly what a certain WordPress plugin gives you. "Subscribe to Comments is a robust plugin that enables commenters to sign up for e-mail notification of subsequent entries."

Here at WordPress.com, we can't install plugins. But if you used WordPress Classic (see wordpress.org), you could certainly use the Subscribe to Comments plugin.

  8. Readers can subscribe to the RSS feed for a post that will show new comments as they are made. The feed URL is the URL of the post plus "feed/" tacked on the end.

For example, the feed for Phy's most recent post is http://ysamphy.wordpress.com/2007/10/10/overlake_school_in_pailin/feed/

  9. Dunno when WordPress.com will consider this great tool. With it we, who are not using social bookmarkers like del.icio.us and digg it, can easily keep updated with comments to particular posts i feel like listening to what opinions other people have about them.

Blogspot just pushed the feature on October 25. And i am already enjoying it very much. I can have all the new comments to the posts i like delivered right into my inbox.

I really can't wait for WordPress.com to launch the feature.
