Novice: I need a wide page / how to cancel right side bar

1. Hi all,

I am an absolute WP novice. I have just started setting up a simple site using the WP online tools (http://<myname>.wordpress.com/wp-admin) to create the website.

My first little problem is that I need one of my site pages to be a *wide* page, since I need to insert a *wide* table. See: http://avrahammakeler.wordpress.com/word-to-webhelp-hatt-comparison-matrix/

However, I see that default WP pages seem to have a default width for content, and my table columns beyond that (to the right) have become compressed and right-cropped.

I note that at the right of the content area is a side bar or menu column containing:

Recent Posts | Categories | Archives

How can I cancel this right-hand column *for this page only*, which I assume will then free up the whole page-width for my own use?

(I had previously wrongly posted this to another category. Sorry.)

TIA

avraham

The blog I need help with is avrahammakeler.wordpress.com.

2. With the theme you are using, the only way to hide the sidebar on a certain page is through editing the CSS and specifically targeting that particular page by ID. Some themes have "full-width no sidebar page templates, but Titan does not.

Panos did this post, , which gives information about which themes have sidebars on pages and which have page templates that you can apply to individual pages.

From that post, these are the themes that have page templates for "no sidebar:"

Beach, Bueno, Coraline, Enterprise, Monochrome, Motion, Notepad, Rusty Grunge, Spectrum, Structure, The Morning After, Toolbox, Twenty Eleven, Twenty Ten, Vostok, zBench.

3. Sorry, I forgot the link to the post by Panos: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/11/12/widgets-on-pages-or-single-posts/ .

4. Great! Thanks!
I will check it out.

5. >> With the theme you are using, the only way to hide the sidebar on a certain page is through editing the CSS and specifically targeting that particular page by ID

The first thing I did was to check the CSS of the page under the Pages group. But I understand that my page is kept in a "bubble" - I can't see or edit teh CSS code of the whole page that contains my page content.

So where would I access the CSS?

I am checking out the themes and sidebars things you mentioned.

Thanks,

avraham

6. The CSS edit area is at appearance > custom design on the CSS tab. To change the CSS, you would have to purchase the Custom Design upgrade. Before buying the upgrade, you can go to appearance > Custom Design and to the CSS tab and wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try out changes before you buy the upgrade. Once in a while you may have to refresh the preview page to see the changes.

7. Thanks! to thesacredpath.

8. The themes listed above aren't the only ones that allow a full-width no-sidebar page. Also: Blogum, Chateau, Elegant Grunge, Modularity Lite, Mystique, Pilcrow.
