OMG it's gone - ARRGGGHHH!

  1. This thread is a a thread for screaming into when you do something stupid. Today I chose to compose directly into the editor, rather than using and offline blog editor like I always recommend other bloggers do.

Well, I just paid the price. The post I have been working on all day suddenly just evaporated and all I had left was the letter "y". All other text was gone. "OMG it's gone!," I screamed.

I did restore it from a jumbled up post revision (saved by autosave) but when I went to click "save draft" I was so upset that I accidentally clicked "publish" instead and it sailed out on the feed.

I immediately changed the post visibility to "private," and now I'm going to pour a glass of wine and eat dinner, and not think about blogging for at least a couple of hours.

Please feel free to recount your blogging error moments in this thread whenever they occur.

The blog I need help with is onecoolsitebloggingtips.com.

  2. Mine are too many to mention :) well, it took me an hour and a half to format a post, until you clued me in on editing the HTML code, and discovering the kitchen sink...

  3. Cheers!

I uploaded 126 photos to Flickr from a trip and was batch-tagging, naming, and classifying them when I turned because my friend's cat did something stupid (I should just let it do whatever it wants; eventually it will drown in a toilet or something stupid) and when I turned back to the screen I'd obviously hit some buttons when I turned because it said "Do you want to save the last change?"

I hit no. And it erased four hours of work: all the tags, titles, everything but the photos with useful names like 3292987498-lc9o GONE.

  4. @Raincoaster That's got to be frustrating!

  5. It totally killed my desire to blog it. And it was an awesome trip, too. Three days in Victoria, all expenses paid. I wanted to strangle Flickr.

  6. @joer223
I too have spent long hours wrestling with the editor attempting to align and format text and images but that was long ago.

When raincoster and I began here there were no support documents. There was only a single forum thread containing a few FAQ and answers. There was no step-by-step guide to setting up a blog and learning how to use it. We learned how to use the software and all of the features by having enough of what it takes to click buttons and experiment on our own. When we got stuck we asked for help and we were taught how to fish. No one landed a fish, cooked it, and served it up to us.

What's cool about the here and now is that we have support documentation that contains everything we learned over the years and much more besides. It's even enhanced with illustrations and videos. No living document of this nature is ever perfect or complete but it's way, way more than what we began with, and the searchbox is full of years of useful information that is still valid today. In addition, there are blogs like mine and others that are specifically aimed to provide relevant and useful information for wordpress.com bloggers.

I say it's a good time to be a wordpress.com beginner even though you will suffer frustrations there are resources and Volunteers and Staff that will gladly provide fishing instructions and pass you a pole with line and a baited hook. ;)

What a bummer! Three days in Victoria all expenses paid is like a gift from the gods of good fortune. Don't I wish I had been there to? You bet I do. :) However, I can understand why, after the catastrophe you don't feel inclined to blog it.

I had another ARGGGGGGGHH! last night but until I'm fully recovered and no longer feeling emotional about it I won't be discussing it.

Sigh ... another Monfay with me wondering WTH happened to the week that's gone.

  8. @TiTi I didn't know you went back that far, but I can see why you're such an experienced user or wordpress.COM, and other platforms as well. I'm learning to use the support documentation more, and figuring things out by trial and error, as you know.
It's really hard being a novice, "Ricky Newguy" so to speak! there's so much I want to learn and accomplish, and I want it NOW! which I know is not realistic, so it's a slow one post at a time process. I am however having great fun learning and blogging. And you're certainly an inspiration to me. That's not an "effusive comment" by the by....just the truth!

  9. I'm glad to hear you find my comments inspiring. I'm it's good to know you appreciate my dry as melba toast sense of humor too. ;)

  10. I'm a sucker for that sort of humor ;)

  11. You cannot see me, of course, and that's what's always missing from online communications. About 60 - 80% of the communicating we do as humans is delivered via facial expressions, body language an gestures. I'm an introvert who has become far more "chatty" online than I am in person. I love improv comedy and have had some experience learning it and a tiny bit performing. According to my teachers and the other students I excel at mime. I thought their feedback was interesting because I prefer mime to vocalizing hands down!

  12. You never cease to amaze me! But when you made that remark about hanging out the shingle I laughed out loud. Didn't need to see you.....i could feel you on that one

  13. Well, I had a pingback I tracked back on today that led to a blog where I found content stolen from my blog. The good news is that the comment i left led to action of the right kind. The person has left a comment on my blog. He took down the content and apologized and I accepted the apology. Now I'm going to bed. Tomorrow I am blogging. I am not answering email or the phone. I am blogging only.

  14. I'm pleased. As The Persians say "Sleep is a Rose....." Goodnight!
    Happy Blogging!

  15. BTW I deleted the post after the person apologized.

  16. Oh, I wouldn't have done that. Learning experiences are bloggable, even those belonging to other people.

  17. It's the first and probably the only time I will ever delete a post.

  18. I did something stupid. After Geocities folded, I updated my links pages to list the Geocities sites as defunct. Except for the one on the Generator Links page.

I checked my blog stats this morning and found that someone had click that link yesterday. Heck, the site's name came up in yesterday's search terms. I've fixed the problem, but man, I'm so embarrassed!

  19. That's an arraggghh! moment for sure.

  20. Cutting and pasting code over and over again, always being stripped away until I realized the code was restricted....Learning everyday!

  21. ARRGGGHHH I uninstall-ed Firefox and I check marked the box to get rid of the personal data totally forgetting this would wipe out my bookmarks. I had over 300 bookmarks.

Slaps self in the forehead and now looks for a rock to hide under.

  22. I have previously done the same thing. arrraggghh!

  23. I didn't do anything stupid but Jaipal Banala did. Today I discovered several of my posts from http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com were been stolen from it. There’s no one I detest more than a content thief.

Spread the word about this splog pixelshop.info because it's full of stolen content > Content thief! Jaipal Banal -mkarunreddy

  24. I've made a comment on your article, TT. These people are scum.

  25. Thanks so much for the comment. I think we have to publish their names and expose them as well as making DMCA complaints. The entire site is a splog full of ripped off posts! I appreciate your support.

  26. Yikes! I hope they took your stuff down by now?

  27. I love killing sploggers. I kilt one at WP.com just the other day; or rather, Mark did for me.

  28. Favourite thing to do: splogger hunting. Love it. :)

  29. @taletellerin
They definitely took my content off. See the end of the post "update" http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/05/23/content-thief-jaipal-banal-mkarunreddy/ and the third to last comment.

  30. @raincoaster
I play by the rules. I report any sploggers, spammers and/or other OS violators every day without hesitation and Mark brings the hammer down.

    @taletellerin

LOL ... Join the hunting party any time you want. ;)
