I have four blogs built from the first one I set up. If I upgrade the main blog, does that upgrade the others for the same cost? Can I upgrade one of the other blogs without upgrading the main one?

All blogs are independent. Every upgrade applies to one blog only and only for one year when it's due for renewal. The only exception is the premium theme upgrade which is a one time payment for one blog only and for the lifetime of the blog while hosted here at WordPress.com.
