Order of the Categories listing

  1. is there a way to make certain categories listed higher on the list? for instance, right now they're listed alphabetically, but i want certain ones listed higher up so they're the first ones people see

  2. Have you tried putting numbers in front of the words? 1-2-3

  3. You can also copy and paste the html out of the category widget and place it within a text widget whil eputting it in the order that you want it in.

  4. Dr Mike, how can I do what you suggest without having to manually go to "edit" in each and every link in my blogroll to copy the link?

  5. Unfortunately, you can't. There is no way to do this automatically in a batch mode. These are the instructions you need to do as drmike suggests. It's a manually lengthy process and will require manual updating every time a new post is published.

IMO going to -> Manage -> Categories -> and editing the categories by putting a number 1,2,3 or alpha numeric A,B,C in front of the category title is far easier. And once you have edited the category all posts under it will be automatically changed too.

Example: Apples, Cherries, Oranges can become
    1 Oranges, 2 Apples, 3 Cherries

  6. shouldn't it be possible to solve this problem in the same manner as with 'sorting pages' just by inserting "spaces" instead of digits?

  7. Yes I do think it's likely to work on this as well. Please try it and share the results with us.

  8. I don't know if this will work, but following on the number listing....if you want them ordered but don't want the numbers to show..maybe you can input the numbers in white text? this way, they'll be recognized but invisible to the eye and you'll easily still be able to tag categories when you post without any other :)

  9. the trick with the "spaces" instead of the digits/letters doesn't work to create some kind of hierarchy for the posting-categories (or posting-sub-categories). the space at the beginning is not recognised and they are automatically alphabetically ordered - the digits/letters work though.

  10. The other way to do this (my preferred option) is just to use the tag cloud. The more important a tag in your blog is more prominent is the wording. I then have a categories drop down as well - although this is probably pointless.
It stops me having to worry about the order.

  11. i like this idea of having a tag cloud of your blog!
but i think jeremypfitzer is looking for a way for him to decide what's top and not the readers. going back to the "space-trick" again on the other hand, digits help orientation, especially when you have a larger numbre of categories to scroll throug.

  12. Thanks for letting us know that the space insertion trick was a "no go" when it comes to reordering categories.
