Oxygen Theme -- publishing posts without appearing in "recent" or "more"

  1. Hi, I'm working on a blog (parablepress.wordpress.com) that runs like a literary magazine -- each issue will have a separate page, the most recent one using the Showcase Page template.

Of course, I don't want stories from Issue One to show up in the Showcase Page for Issue Two; is there any way to remove articles from the "recent" and "more" article headers?

I don't have access to customizing the CSS because I'm using the free version.

The blog I need help with is parablepress.wordpress.com.

  2. Any help?

  3. In Oxygen, there is no way to show posts in both the featured post slider and the Recent Articles area. It's been designed to not to have duplicated posts on the Showcase Page template page. Also note there is no option to display more than three Recent Articles on the Showcase Page template.

... each issue will have a separate page, the most recent one using the Showcase Page template.

Pages and Posts are not the same. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
There can be only one Showcase template page on any blog. It's an either or choice. Oxygen Theme Description http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/oxygen Live demo site http://oxygendemo.wordpress.com/

In Oxygen you can either have a Home page that displays your posts or a static front page ie. a Showcase template. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/#setting-up-a-static-front-page

Not that I am aware of.

  4. P.S. Not to worry as justpi will be along to assist you with this.

  5. I'm not sure that I was clear, so let me try to clarify: each "issue" will be hosted on a single page, the most recent of which will use the Showcase Page template, and each "article" will be in a single post.

This is what I'd like to do:
For the newest issue -- the Showcase Page -- I want the "recent" and "more" articles to not show anything before, say, a certain date. Or, if necessary, not show posts which I choose that section to ignore.

  6. Hi parablepress,

I think I may have a solution that will work for your site with the Oxygen theme. First a bit about how the Showcase template works:

    - It displays recent posts in reverse chronological order.
    - It will always display the three most recent posts under the "Recent Articles" heading. This cannot be changed.
    - The remaining recent posts will be displayed under the "More Articles" heading. You can change the number of posts displayed here, but it will also affect other parts of your site like category and tag archives.

How many posts does an issue normally have?

If the answer is close to 10+ then this solution might work really well.

When you release a new issue containing 10 posts, the latest three will display under "Recent Articles" leaving us with 7. You can trick the "More Articles" section into displaying only 7 posts by adjusting the value of the "Blog pages show at most" option found in Settings → Reading. This will make sure that the older posts from the last issue do not display on your homepage.

In the event that each issue only contains about 4 posts, this solution may not be the best because your archives and search results would only display 1 or 2 posts per page.

Please let me know if this makes sense and if you think it will work.

  7. I think this would work, because we intend to have more than 10 per issue, but the first would look strange because it's going to have less than 6. How would doing this affect my categories and archives? That's not a huge concern for me because each past issue will have its own page with HTML links to old stories, but I want to make sure it wouldn't mess anything up too badly.
