Permission to reproduce my page for book I'm writing

  1. I'm writing a book which is being published this winter. One of the chapters concerns networking, and I would like to reproduce one or two of my WordPress pages as examples of how WordPress can be an effective way to put yourself and your work out there. Since I am using a theme credited to someone else and the TOS doesn't give me the right to reproduce, I need to know who to contact for permission to reproduce screenshots for the book. I have been unable to find any phone numbers, and don't know whether or not I have to get separate permission from Brian Veluso (creator of Chaotic Soul, the background) or just one permission from the folks at WorldPress.

Any help would be appreciated. I would hate to have to omit this stuff from the book.

    Thanks,

    Jim

The blog I need help with is jimklein.wordpress.com.

  2. Almost all materials published on WordPress, WordPress.com and WordPress.org is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by
the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or
(at your option) any later version.

This being the case, you can redistribute it and/or modify it in any way you want provided you give proper credit and acknowledgement and provide links to the source so that the reader is fully aware that the material is not your original work.

Caveat: I am not a lawyer nor am I official spokesperson of any organizations affiliated to WordPress inc; I am just an ordinary user of WP products.

    Hope this helps.

  3. The answer is simple, and NOT the answer given by jtanna01, since you're not reproducing the software, you're reproducing the THEME.

Contact staff via your Dashboard Help button. It is almost certain that they will give you the green light. Staff are able to contact the theme author directly, and they are more aware of the terms under which WP.com uses themes than a regular blogger would be. You might already have that right. In any case, they can clear things up and they are very supportive of authors here.

Thanks for the reply. I hit the Help button, and from what I can tell, it appears that in order for a human being to respond to a question, I need to upgrade my membership. Otherwise, I am not entitled to more than a search of topics. Does that sound right?

  5. Unfortunately that's a supposedly-temporary throttle that staff have put on the support service. I'll flag this thread for staff attention and see if that gets you a response.

  6. All of the themes in use at WordPress.com are licensed under the GPL, so you may feel free to use them as desired.

Of course, a credit back to the theme author would be super-nice. :)
