Photo Handling in my Blog Posts Has Changed

  1. Hi,
In my older posts, if a reader clicked on a photo to enlarge it/view it in full resolution, when they used the 'back' arrow to go back to the post, they would return to the same point in the post where they clicked on the photo.

Since the changes to 'Media Manager' over the last week or so, I notice that on newer posts, if you click on a photo to view it full-size, when you use the 'back' button, you are returned to the start of the post.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?
    Thanks, Carol.

The blog I need help with is mountaincowardadventures.wordpress.com.

  2. I think you may have a browser issue. I'm using Firefox 17 and that did not happen to me when I viewed the first image in this post http://mountaincowardadventures.wordpress.com/2012/12/14/a-winter-dash-of-the-kentmere-round-the-connies/

If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported. To disable see > http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com please do these four things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache:

    http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

    2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

    3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

    4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

If it’s still happening, let us know which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://supportdetails.com and also post any error reports you get.

  3. Actually, I'm not really sure what is going on - I've tried several times on the same post and, sometimes it goes back to where I left off, sometimes it goes back to the head of the post...

  4. I just tried two more posts and clicking the back button didn't return me to the beginning of the posts.

  5. I clear my cache quite regularly while I'm working depending on what I'm doing. I'm having this problem both on my work PC (IE8) and my home laptop (Chrome's latest version).

To be honest, it doesn't worry me if it doesn't work for me, just for my readers. They'll stop clicking on photos to see the higher resolution versions if they keep being taken back to the start of the post (obviously, I don't know if that is what's happening to my readers or not or whether it's just me).

I'll try some of the other things you mention above though thanks...

  6. I checked I have 3rd party cookies enabled - I do. I cleared the cache. I also used that (very useful) link you gave me for 'support details' (didn't know about that :-) ) and my browser version is:
    Chrome 23.0.1271.97

Anyway, if it's not taking you back to the start each time, hopefully it's not taking my readers back to the start each time either (it still is for me most of the time but not always!).

Thanks for your help so far :-)

  7. There's absolutely no difference between your older and your recent posts. What happens after clicking on an image then using the back arrow depends on how you arrived at the single-post view: if you had clicked the post title, or an outside link to the post, you will return to where the image you clicked is; if you had clicked the read-more tag on the main page, you will return to where the tag has been inserted.

It's looking like it's just happening to me then but on two different machines. I have noticed that, since recent changes to how we add photos (the latest media library upgrade), when I click on a photo it doesn't display the name of the photo over the photo any more but just shows it within the URL of the photo at the bottom of the page and I was thinking that was the cause.

I'm thinking this is quite an intermittent problem anyway as I've just tried clicking on a post using the 'read-more' tag and also clicking on a post via its title from my archive index page and, when I clicked on any of the photos to enlarge them and then went back, everything worked okay and it went back to that part of the post instead of the start. But last night, I was trying the same post (clicking on the post title) and sometimes it went back to the start and sometimes it didn't.

  9. The only real change has to do with the title and the alt text in the image code (and this is totally unrelated to your original complaint). Everything else works as before and produces the same results as before.

"when I click on a photo it doesn't display the name of the photo over the photo any more but just shows it within the URL of the photo at the bottom of the page"
Could you rephrase that, as I don't understand what you mean? Are you talking about your actual blog pages or about the dashboard? If you mean the actual blog, could you link to or point to examples?

I'm talking about blog posts not the dashboard.

For example, in the following post:
    http://mountaincowardadventures.wordpress.com/2012/12/14/a-winter-dash-of-the-kentmere-round-the-connies/#more-3963

if you hover over a photo, you no longer get a little box come up over the photo with the title of the photo on whereas, in the older posts, e.g.

    http://mountaincowardadventures.wordpress.com/2011/04/22/putting-the-push-into-pushbiking-to-bendronaig-bothy/

    you do...

  11. Ah, correct rephrasing ("hover over" instead of "click on")!
Yes, that's part of the real change I mentioned in my previous reply: if you didn't do anything yourself, the system used to turn the file name into the image title in the code (title = hover text) while now it turns the file name into the image alt text (alt text = text that shows up if the image can't load as well as used in screen readers). As I already said, this is totally unrelated to your back arrow issue.

  12. As I already said, this is totally unrelated to your back arrow issue.

Agreed. I have clicked several images several times to expand and then clicked the backlink without experiencing the return to the top issue being reported here.

Hmmm - thanks for the link TT.

Sounds like I had a 'tooltip'-type title before (without me having to do anything) - it sounds like a lot of work to keep on using this type of titling as I have to edit after I've inserted the photo. If I think there's anything readers need to know about where or what my photos are, I tend to put an italics line under them explaining things anyway so I think I'll just carry on as normal for that issue.

I agree it seems to be 2 separate issues - just they both started at the same time - when the 'media library' change was made to how we insert photos so I was assuming they were all to do with the new way of doing things.

    Hi,
I've been playing around with this tonight (now I've finished work for Christmas) and I'm thinking 'justpi' is right with his comment:

"What happens after clicking on an image then using the back arrow depends on how you arrived at the single-post view: if you had clicked the post title, or an outside link to the post, you will return to where the image you clicked is; if you had clicked the read-more tag on the main page, you will return to where the tag has been inserted"

for the problem I was having using the back arrow after clicking on a photo to enlarge it as it does only seem to be happening when I select a post by clicking on the 'read more' tag. I swear it wasn't doing it until the recent changes though as I haven't changed the way I check out my posts after posting them - checking that the 'read more' tag is working is one of the first things I check after publishing.

But thanks both of you for your help - I've learnt some useful stuff :-)
    Carol.
