Photos disappearing from the gallery but staying in media library in same post

  1. I have been working with the gallery a bit and have had this occur on multiple occasions. I will write a new blog, give it a name, and save it. I go to upload multiple images and they appear in the gallery. For example, gallery will say "Gallery (25)." I click "save all images" at the bottom of the gallery page and decide I need to work on something else. So I "X" out of the images screen.

I later return to the SAME post and now my gallery is (0). However, my images are in my media library but I can't get them to appear under the Gallery tab so I can sort them and insert them into my post as a gallery vs. individual photos.

    Problem 1:

Can you upload photos in the same post then go back later and work on this without having to use my work around below?

The only way I've found to fix this is to go back and re upload the same photos so they will appear back into the gallery. Then this time, I do everything I need to do in one sitting and do not close the window until I'm done sorting the photos in the gallery and hit insert gallery. It works now.

    Problem 2:

Even if I delete all of the previously uploaded photos, WordPress will still rename my new uploaded photos with the appendages -1. If I don't go back and delete the other photos, then I will have duplicates of large batches of photos which is just taking up valuable space.

Well the obvious answer is don't "decide you need to work on something else" and close the uploader window before inserting the gallery in the post!

Anyway, if this happens to you there's no need for re-uploading. You can use two windows in your browser, go to Manage > Media Library in the one, to the VISUAL post editor in the other, and quickly drag&drop images from library to editor. This way they'll show up in this post's gallery again.

  3. But first - how about a link to your wordpress.COM blog? We don't even know if the gallery problems you are talking about are for blogs here or somewhere else. And consider linking your user name to your blog as explained in the sticky at the top of the forum:

Go into your dashboard -> users -> your profile -> then scroll down to 'contact info'. In the spot where it says 'website' fill in the address of your blog and save the changes.
Now... when you comment here and on other blogs, your name will link to your blog. If you do this before you post your request for help, it will allow forum volunteers to be able to help you quicker since they won't have to ask you for a link and wait until you come back to post one.

  4. Sorry for not including a link. I'm fairly new to WordPress.

panaghiotisadam, I found the Manage > Media Library you said to open in one window. However, I couldn't find the VISUAL post editor. Maybe I opened the wrong VISUAL window? I couldn't drag the images over to the Media Library. Please direct me how to get to the VISUAL post editor.

Thanks in advance for your help!

  5. vivianpage,

I followed your directions and added my blog address.

    Thanks so much!

@navycoat: I said drag the images FROM the Media Library, not TO it.

The visual editor is the one of the two versions of your normal post editor (Manage>Posts). Above the upper right corner of the editor you've got "Visual" and "HTML", and you can toggle between them. The first is where you see things approximately as they will appear in your post (e.g. images as images), the second where you only see text and codes.
