I want people to be able to click on a thumbnail of a picture, opening into a larger picture in another tab or whatever.
Is there a way to make pictures as thumbnails or something similar?

Just insert into your post at Thumbnail size and the Link URL defaults to the image file. An example is the flower on my latest post. I did nothing special and it links to the large picture when you click on it.
The above refers to one picture - but you can do it with a gallery too, just enure your gallery setting is correctly set to "Link Thumbnails to image file"
