Pictures for your blog

I have seen some blogs that seem to have the most wonderful pictures to go with their posts. Mine always seem to be okay, but not great. Where do you guys go to get good pictures? Also, how to you place them in your posts?

The blog I need help with is fatfreebrain.wordpress.com.

  2. I take my own photos (you can probably tell, since they aren't works of art). I usually crop or blur out faces for privacy reasons, but I like being able to put an image to my words. Plus, they help break up blocks of text.

You do need to be careful about using photos from other site and infringing on someone's copyrighted media. Something to absolutely avoid is hyperlinking.

I can't explain this well, perhaps TT or others with more blogging experience can give you the specifics.

  4. i take my own pictures... ive never used anyone elses. when you use someone elses you may have copyright issues plus it just seems unauthentic to me. taking my own lets me be creative. to add a picture you attach it then click "add in post" or "show in post" something like that.. sorry, i have the exact directions. hope i helped anyways!

I have a Resources page. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/resources/ Scroll down and look for "images (free sources)" and you will find 71 sources of them. In all cases read and comply with the Terms of Use. There are many other sources too. Also, how to you place them in your posts?

You go to the support documentation search box http:en.support.wordpress.com and you type in images. The result is > http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/

On the bottom of your Admin page you will find a link to the Learn WordPress.com blogging Tutorial prepared by Staff. http://learn.wordpress.com/ I strongly recommend using it. The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page. I also recommend getting comfortable with learning how to use search utilities for as bloggers we need to have that skill.

    Best wishes with your blog.

  7. 99% of photos across all my blogs are from personal photos taken by me, my partner or if it's writer, they have taken the photo. My problem 40% of time, is choosing from a decent range of relevant photos.

I do make some minor photo adjustments to improve their quality: it helps to use your understanding of primary colour, complementary colour palette to quickly enhance overall colour. Proper minor changes can sometimes even improve image clarity. I don't waste time on pinpoint photo touches.

I have actually visited all of the wordpress.com links that you provided. The reason I still asked the question when it would seem that it was so clearly explained to me is that when I try to grab a picture from the creative commons on Flickr (paying attention to choose only attribution pictures, of course) I can never get the URL to link if I click the "insert photo -> from URL" bottom. I just didn't know if I was doing something wrong.

    @everyone else
Thanks for sharing. I have no relevant photos of my own that would work at this time, but I will keep that in mind. Thanks.

  9. I looked at timethief's list and it looks pretty comprehensive. Another helpful link is Wikipedia's Public domain image resources - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Public_domain_image_resources

  10. This is the outstanding issue. If you have a solution then post it.

  12. Don't click the Insert Photo from URL button at all if you're using Flickr. Click the Share button there, click the GET HTML OR BB CODE and copy that code. Put it in your HTML editor. That works.

  13. Well, I go search via http://search.creativecommons.org/, then find the picture, click on it. I right-click and select "original", then the picture comes in full size, I right-click again and choose "copy image link" - then I paste the url in the "image-insert-tool". That works for me.

    Does this make sense?
I use firefox, if that has anything to do with it?
