I am interested in using the wordpress.com site, but some of the customizations I need are not supported here, for good reason. Is there a list of the plugins that wordpress.com uses? I like some of them (like the preview plugin powered by Snap) and am not familiar with what they are called or if they are even publicly available.

Seems to me that WordPress.com is really using Snap, an Mp3 plugin and mainly widgets. They can be found looking in the FAQ (in nav bar above) and searching these forums:

This is really a rich WordPress MU installation with more than most would have. It has all the functionality of WP 2.1 and then some. If you do some research and play around with a blog (since they are free) you will find out quickly how it all works!
