On my WP .org site I can scour the net for thousands of plugins which I can install at will (if they have been maintained and compatible) but with my WP .com site I am restricted to the default widgets. Is there a way to add plugins/widgets to .com sites? Thanks.

A simple search would have found this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
"No" applies to plugins. You can insert 3rd-party widgets if the code they provide is flash. See here:
