Blogroll, Categories and Recent Posts would be better when displayed on the right column.
Because if it is displayed at the bottom, people who get bored by the first post may move away from the blog, giving them no option to view other posts. The scene is different if those options are displayed in the right column.
Moreover a two column layout would suffice and is visually pleasing.
The blog I need help with is getch.wordpress.com.
depends what kind of blog are you maintaining, like if it is a timeline, or simple you are posting something very specific, then almost no navigation is needed. But i prefer to keep the category menu on the right bar, but the links and others at the footer.
To control the length of the home pages of the blog you can use the <!-- more --> tag : http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/
Also to break the post into pages use the <!-- nextpage --> tag : http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/nextpage/
