post titles not wrapping nicely and too much space below

  1. There is something not right with my post titles. There is too much space below them, and there is a big difference in how a title effects the right and left columns depending on whether the title wraps to another line.

    Compare these two pages:
    http://parishconnections.wordpress.com/2013/09/15/homebound-ministers-to-be-paid-mileage/
    http://parishconnections.wordpress.com/2013/10/06/anne-germaine-cancer-benefit/

    For one reason or another, I had placed the following in the CSS:

    .column-title {
    min-height: 50px;
    width: 57em;
    }

    .column-title div ~ h1 {
    margin-top: 0;
    padding: 0 0 0 230px;
    }

    ALSO NOTE: that on my pages I have it so that the title of the page does not display which required the following insertions:

    .column-narrow {
    position: relative;
    top: -60px;
    }

    .home .column-narrow {
    position: relative;
    top: 0;
    }

    .blog .column-narrow {
    position: relative;
    top: 0;
    }

    .archive .column-narrow {
    position: relative;
    top: -60px;
    }

    .page .column-narrow {
    position: relative;
    top: 10px;
    }

    #searchform input {
    display: inline;
    max-width: 148px;
    width: 148px;
    text-align: left;
    }

    .single .navigation {
    display: none;
    }

    .home .column-title {
    display: none;
    }

    .blog .column-title {
    display: none;
    }

    .page .column-title {
    display: none;
    }

    The blog I need help with is parishconnections.wordpress.com.

  2. To prevent orphaned words on a line (single word) WordPress adds what is called a non-breaking space between the last two words in titles and paragraphs. That will keep at least two words on a line.

    You can however override this by putting a different space code between the last two words on a title. Open the posts or pages that have this problem in the editor and replace the space between the last two words with the following code. To have the code render properly in the forums here, I have to add a space between the first two characters, remove that space when you use the code.

    & ensp;

  3. is that

    You have nothing showing above for the code

  4. anyways, that is not what I am referring to. Sorry if my question above is confusing. How about decreasing the space between the title and the first paragraph of the article?

  5. Sorry about that. Add the following and adjust the 30px value as you desire.

    h1.title-header {
        margin-bottom: 30px;
    }
  6. yea, i tried that...but then it effects the side columns too...they move up the page

  7. okay, i fixed it. I had to tweak a few other css rules. I should not have wasted everyone's time with this question. Just needed a little more time to figure things out. Thanks anyways.

  8. Glad you got it, and it is not problem, and you are always welcome.
