Posterous import size limit is too low

  1. I'm having trouble importing my blog from Posterous because of your 15MB upload limit on a Posterous blog. I have two Posterous blogs and even the small one (only 9 posts) has a backup file that's larger than 15MB. Am I screwed, or is there a workaround? Thanks!

The blog I need help with is erikblazing.wordpress.com.

  2. Hi Erik, do you have any idea why the file is so big? For example, are there any images you may have uploaded that aren't currently being used in any of your posts, which you could delete from your Posterous site before generating the export?

You may want to try a file splitter - here's one for Mac:

This would let you split the file into several chunks, to work around the 15MB limit. Just let us know if you need any help with it.

  3. Hi Kathryn,

Thanks for replying; I figured it out! When you back up a Posterous blog, Posterous gives you a giant zip file- I was trying to upload the entire zip file to WordPress (which obviously didn't work).

When I uncompressed the zip, I found an xml file inside that had "wordpress" in its filename (it was ~250kb). I uploaded that instead, and voila - worked like a charm! Either I wasn't following instructions correctly (totally possible), or the instructions were missing that crucial step. Regardless, I'm set to go now. Thanks!

  4. Fantastic! Thanks for letting me know, I'm glad it worked. I'll also check our documentation to make sure it's clear if it's not already.
