The only way to post an MP3 file (a song, in my case) is to pay for it, right? Or is there some way to do so (short of putting a youtube video up) without paying for the extras? That is all I want to do, but I really do not want to pay for it.

If you want to upload the files here, then you need the space upgrade which also allows more file types.
You can host the files on another online service such as file den and then use the audio shortcode here.
Hosting the files on another service and using the audio shortcode does not cost you any money or require any upgrades.
