My posts are extremely long and don't "sit" right on my main page. I was hoping I could condense my posts to a paragraph or so and offer a link at the bottom that would open the full post.

Certainly. There are several ways of splitting content. The most common is using "the more tag" and the result is the beginning on the post on the front page and a "read more" link to click to read the rest of the post.
