Premium theme prices

  1. I'm new to WordPress.com though I have used WordPress for a long time.

I was checking out the premium themes and noticed the theme Funki http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/funki/ is $100 on WordPress.com, yet I could buy it for $39 http://themify.me/themes/funki why is it so much more on WordPress.com?

The blog I need help with is earthjellyfish.com.

  2. I also wanted to ask (couldn't find an edit button), if I did buy a premium theme from WordPress.com such as Funki, do I get access to the theme if I decided to move my blog to a self hosted? Or am I only allowed to use the theme on WordPress.com ?

  3. WP.com and WP.org are totally separate. You can't port a theme over.

  4. I'm not sure what wp.org and wp.com being seperate sites has to do with my questions.

Why is the funki theme $39 on the authors site, but $100 on WordPress.com.

If I buy it (or any other premium theme) on WordPress.com for my blog on WordPress.com and later on I leave WordPress.com, do I get a copy of the theme. Or is the theme only for use on WordPress.com?

Honestly, the difference in price would pay for a few years of hosting for a self hosted blog.

I'm not complaining, I don't plan on buying it, I'm just curious.

  5. If I buy it (or any other premium theme) on WordPress.com for my blog on WordPress.com and later on I leave WordPress.com, do I get a copy of the theme. Or is the theme only for use on WordPress.com?

    See here:
Note: Premium Themes are customized for WordPress.com usage only, and cannot be transferred to self-hosted WordPress.org sites. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/premium-themes/

  6. Ah ok, thanks Timethief, I didn't see that page.

Any idea why the same theme is so expensive on WordPress.com compared to the authors site?

  7. That's a question for Staff and/or the Theme Designer to answer.

  8. Hi jarvarro,

The version of Funki for WordPress.com differs from the one offered by Themify for self-hosted sites, and the pricing is determined by two different entities - that's why prices are different. The features are also somewhat different as the theme code gets customized for use specifically on WordPress.com.

One of the big advantages for the WP.com version is that the awesome customer support at the premium themes forum. Also, on WordPress.com, you don't need to worry about installing or upgrading the theme - we take care of it for you, without you even noticing. We generally feel our prices are spot on but, at the end of the day, everyone feels about it differently.

Also, as a premium theme customer, you are entitled to post your help requests on a dedicated private forum to get support from the theme shops who created those themes: http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/

I hope this helps - let us know if you have any more questions.
