Problems with Image Quality

I'm having real difficulty getting images within blog posts to display in reasonable quality. I need the images to be large enough to show detail when viewed at source, but I don't want them to look scrappy when I post them at normal size on the blog. I've tried every conceivable variation of format, and it's becoming really frustrating . . .

Here's an example of images posted as jpeg, gif, and png - in each case there's degradation of either color or detail:

Here's an exampe of a (non-wordpress) blog where this has been done successfully, so it must be possible:

Can anyone offer me any help, as I'm tearing my hair out?

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is advantagetradetools.com.
