problems with javascript in text widgets

I have tried to create two buttons linking to other sites by importing Javascript into a text widget. The other sites (Twitter and Goodreads) generated the script I imported. If I save either widget, the code is displayed in its complete, ugly fullness. See the footer area of my site for the Twitter example; the Goodreads script runs to pages of the sidebar, and has been deleted.

How can I import such text and have a working link without the text/script displaying?

The blog I need help with is geoffreygudgion.com.
