Question on "Stay" Theme

  1. Hi After a long long wait, I was really pleased with the Stay theme. I was looking for a theme where the mail blog width was 900+ - ideal for a photoblog. Though stay was more targetted for hotel business, I was impressed with the layout and features for my photoblog. Was testing the same and had some quick questions.

The concerns am pointing out can be seen in the test blog - test00000000000.wordpress.com

    1. I have not selected anything for primary menu and only have a custom top menu. But both are getting displayed. Is this by design or a bug ?

    2. On WordPress Pages, I see there is option for a Primary Side bar and a secondary side bar. I would like to have just the secondary side bar so I can mimic the same to the blog layout. Unfortunately a search box is added even if I do not have any widgets on the primary side bar. Even if this is by design , would it be possible to have an option to turn off the primary side bar ?

The blog I need help with is liketheocean.com.

  2. Create a new blank menu with nothing in it and save. Assign that blank menu to the primary location and save.

  3. The primary menu shows on post related pages (main posts page, categories, tags and archives pages). The secondary menu shows on static pages such as "about."

  4. Whoops, my bad. The primary shows on the left side of static pages and the secondary on the right side of static pages.

In general, WordPress.com stays pretty close to the original theme author's design and once a theme is released, they typically don't make design changes to it. To turn off the one sidebar isn't as simple as it sounds. It requires new PHP scripts to be created and new styling done in CSS for the new page layout.

  5. @thesacredpath - Thanks for ur inputs. The fix on the menu did work. The one on the primary sidebar for pages - i was hoping it was bug and could be fixed :)
Appreciate ur time and inputs, thanks !

  6. Anyone know if this theme will be available for download / self-hosting? Have not found it among those themes yet...

  7. @zigmainfo
Go to WordPress.ORG and look here > http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ If you cannot find it there the answer is there is no WordPress.ORG version of the theme.

  8. I just started my own blog using the stay theme but somehow i can't make the home slider work. On my 'home page' i activated the home template but still it is not working. can somebody please help me?

  9. just solved my problem:) thx anyways.

  10. I have the exact same problem rahelmag, like to spill the beans?

    Ta

  11. @bandwit
Consult the theme description please > http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/stay/

  12. Thanks for that timethief I have but I have to admit to being a real newbie at this and I guess there's something I'm missing.

I have created a page, set it to be a static page, set it to be a Home under templates and created 3 pages with just a picture in and added then as pages under the home slider in customize but no dice.

I've managed to change the background and header text colours just to prove to myself that it's updating.

I don't see any assigned widgets and certainly no slider widget, wonder if that's the problem. Must learn more but a little frustrated that the description either doesn't explain correctly or assumes knowledge I don't have...

    Thanks again

  13. This blog is wearing Clean Home http://bandwit.wordpress.com/
Please post an active link starting with http:// to the blog wearing Stay.

  14. The theme you refer has a theme description here http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/stay/
    live demo site http://staydemo.wordpress.com/

You will need to follow the instructions to make the theme to look like the one in the demo. The demo is using the "Home page template" which cycles through select top level pages on your site. Create a page called for example "Home" and then set that page as the static front page for your site and create another page fro example "blog" for your posts to appear on.

The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page. To do that create two pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

    Front page displays
    __ Your latest posts

    A static page (select below)
    Front page:
    Posts page:

Note: The theme has a featured page slider and image size is at least 960 wide. Individual post featured image is at least 920 wide.

  15. Thanks for this, am getting through it but it shows a perfect example of my frustration with the documentation and the reality that I see.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_a_Static_Front_Page tells me to:

"Enable "Permalinks" to show the "page title" in the address, since /index.php?p=423 defeats the purpose of making a static front page."

Clicking on "Permalinks" takes me to http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks where I'm told that:

    "Choosing your permalink structure
In the Settings → Permalinks panel (Options → Permalinks before WordPress 2.5), you can choose one of the "common" structures or enter your own in the "Custom structure" field using the structure tags."

As hard as I look I cannot see a Settings -> Permalinks option, I see General, Writing etc up to Sharing then Polls but no Permalink alphabetically between these 2.

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

    Ta

  16. Apart from that I believe I've done what is required.

Would happily allow you access to show me the error of my ways.....

  17. Ahaah!!

Tried this again with a different (new) blog and got the same result.

did some more reading and discovered that what I actually needed to do was to set up pages that have a Featured image. I was just adding an image not a Featured image as stated by andrewcpht here:

    http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/homepage-slider?replies=6#post-1257106

Thanks for the help timethief, next problem is bound to be just around the corner.... :0)

My comments about the documentation still stand btw, going to be a hard and shallow learning curve...

    Mark

  18. Hi Mark,
Thanks for letting us know you have sorted this. Best wishes.

  19. GOOD AFTERNOON .. 'M NEEDING TO PUT ONE BANNER TEMPLATE STAY IN EARLY AS SHOW IN THE DEMO! HOW DO I

  20. @rhuanoliveira
You are not using the Stay theme and your post here is completely off topic which only creates confusion. Please click this link and start your own thread > http://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

Also know in advance that advertising banners are not allowed on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. These are what will get a WordPress.com blog suspended:

  21. Hi, how can I remove the "search" widget from my pages?
    http://klhbakingco.com/about-me/

    thanks

  22. hello - i created a featured image on my home page and it has tiled into two images. how do i set it as one? also i would like to know how to use lowercase letters, not caps on this page - for the menu and title. is it possible? thank you! emily

  23. oh and, there is a home button on the lower right hand corner of my featured image on my home page - how do i get rid of that? thanks!

  24. You're misusing the theme. The Home page template is supposed to display a slider that links to other pages and displays their featured images - check the theme demo:
    http://staydemo.wordpress.com/
In that case you must not set a featured image to the home page, and you must not include it in the pages you assign to the home slider (in Appearance > Customize).
If you're not interested in having such a home page, you need to edit the page you've set as your front and select the default template for it.

  25. hi justpi, that was helpful, thank you. i have fixed the home slider. i am now wondering how to change the button in the lower righthand corner that tells you which image is coming next. i'd love to delete it or at least to be able to edit it or move it. is this possible? thanks you! emily

  26. You're welcome.
But now you switched to a different theme, so there's no point answering this question.

  27. i'm testing other themes while i wait for a response. is there a way to delete the button?

  28. You can easily remove the word in the button (by editing the respective page and deleting its title), but you cannot remove the arrow and the white frame without the Custom Design upgrade.

It seems to me that you're trying to do something Stay isn't designed for: the slider isn't a slideshow of images, it's a slideshow of images that link to pages.

  29. yes each of those images in the slider will link to that category of photos, the theme would work fine for that. my problem is that the button is not as minimal as i would like and i can't change it. that's too bad. the reason i have chosen the "stay" theme is because its the most minimalist theme i have found. thanks for your response.
