Re: Twenty Ten theme

  1. My blog is: http://lornakismet.wordpress.com
The question is about the Twenty Ten theme. SO TEMPTING!

    1. What is a Featured Image? How is it different from me just putting in an image anywhere I want to in any post in my present Vigilance theme? This is a big question for me because ***I really like the Announcement Box in Vigilance, and for me to give it up there would have to be something very very good to take its place.***

    2. What are Asides and Galleries? This sounds again, awfully awfully interesting! :-)

    3. Is Twenty Ten as good as Vigilance when it comes to those Search Engines finding your blog/posts?

    4. Is there a blog using the Twenty Ten theme that actually is using the 2010 features? That would make it easier to understand the explanatory text.

    5. Has there been ANY KIND OF PROBLEM with bloggers who have switched from Vigilance to 2010 but then later decided to return to Vigilance?

Thank you in advance for your help. If I get clear on 2010 and it's what I think it is, then I might just jump on it!

    ~LK

The blog I need help with is lornakismet.wordpress.com.

  2. As for your image question when you use the featured image option the theme will display the image as custom header for that post or page you can see the difference by visiting these links.

    Default custom header I made » http://wpxpert.wordpress.com/

Featured image with the 2010 theme » http://wpxpert.wordpress.com/archives/about-2/

Is Twenty Ten as good as Vigilance when it comes to those Search Engines finding your blog/posts?

I haven't seen a difference between the 2 themes in this matter

  3. Dear slikbonez -- I clicked both of your links and feel like an idiot for still not understanding what a Featured Image is.

Is it that the actual large header at the top of the blog homepage takes the picture/image for the post? I am confused!

In Vigilance, I can put as many images as I want in a post. This does not affect the Header or the Announcement Box.

How is a Featured Image different?

    --LK

  4. Hear is the FAQ about featured images http://wp.me/PEmnE-1mP

Is it that the actual large header at the top of the blog homepage takes the picture/image for the post? I am confused!

Correct with the 2010 theme featured images are used as custom headers please note you will need the image to match the themes header width & height dimensions before picking it as a featured image with the 2010 theme.

Also right now the 2010 theme is the only theme that uses the featured image as custom header. there is some new themes that handle the featured image in a different way.

  5. Dear Slikbonez, I now understand. Thank you for that link!

QUESTION: Let's say that someone clicks onto a link to get to one isolated post in my blog. Is it that no matter what post a viewer lands on, the picture/image on that post will be the picture that is in the big header above?

What if a viewer lands on a post that has no image? Then what will show up in the Header???????

    ~~LK

  6. OMIGOD SLIKBONES, Up there I said that I understood. Well, upon going back there and re-reading it, I do not understand about Featured Images. I do not understand how featured images are any different from images that I find to place in my posts.

Is there any blog that has several posts with featured images so one can see what's going on?

    ~LK

  7. Featured images are not the same as the images in your post for example a featured image on some of the new themes are used to display a popular post on the home page without wording and when the image is clicked the reader is taken to the full post.

As for 2010 you don't need any images in your post to use the featured image option and the image can be different from the ones in your post and displayed as a custom header when that post or page is clicked on..

Conclusion: The featured image can be an image from your post or entirely different depending on what the usage is for the featured image.

  8. There's a support entry that also explains Featured Images. You will find it here. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/

  9. @TT, I shared that link in this reply http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/re-twenty-ten-theme?replies=8#post-463534 and she didn't understand the FAQ page as you can see from this reply http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/re-twenty-ten-theme?replies=8#post-463631

  10. A different question about the Twenty-Ten theme: the headline for my blog post keeps vanishing from the homepage. It continues to exist on the permalink of the blog post itself, but not on the homepage. Is this an early glitch, or has anyone else had this problem?

Other than that, I've only had Twenty-Ten a couple of days, but loving it.

  11. @karlav
Will you please URL for your blog so Staff can see it? Support is temporarily closed and is expected to open again soon.

  12. So sorry I forgot that, tt:
    http://vallancemedia.wordpress.com

As you will see, I jerryrigged my own headline on the homepage in the meantime.
    Thanks,
    Karla

  13. @Karla: The post title vanishes because you've filed the post under "Asides". That category works as a special feature in this theme (designed for short announcements - see demo blog: http://2010dev.wordpress.com/ ).

  14. Slikbonez-- you wrote: “

And I finally do understand now! So as I think I understand it, a Featured Image is like a visual teaser. It is provocative probably. It makes the viewer click it to read what the story is about. Yes?

And now, what Karlav said about ASIDES: I did not understand what Asides are.

In the Support for “Featured Images” it was written very vaguely and it went over my head.

  15. I'm just as confused as @lornakismet. I love what the Twenty Ten theme is capable of doing (because I've seen it on others' blogs) but I'm not understanding how to make them work on my page.

    1. How do I change the font?

    2. Why are some of the links on my page highlighted in blue and purple?

    3. How do I add the drop down menu? Where is that option?

    4. How do I add more tabs under my header besides "home" and "about me"?

Is the reason I can't see these things because I have not upgraded CSS?

  16. 1. How do I change the font?

Changing font style on posts or pages either post by post or page by page
We wordpress.com users can change font styles and colors on our posts and pages, a post and a page at a time. http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/font-size-color/

Changing font style and color throughout the whole blog
    Appearance > TypeKit Fonts

We cannot access the templates in our wordpress.com blogs and edit the underlying php and html. However, if we choose to pay for a CSS upgrade and undertake CSS editing then we can change font styles and colors throughout the entire blog.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/editing-css/

This upgrade is NOT recommended to those who do not have CSS editing experience as there is no Staff support, and only 2 volunteers choose to expend time & energy on helping others learn CSS editing. Here’s the link to an excellent tutorial
    http://www.w3schools.com/Css/default.asp

    2. Why are some of the links on my page highlighted in blue and purple?

All links change color after being clicked.

    3. How do I add the drop down menu? Where is that option?

This theme provides drop-down menus from "Parent pages to "child" aka sub-pages. In order to use it you will need to create static pages as Parent pages and then create static "child" pages and assign them to the parent pages. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/

    4. How do I add mroe tabs under my header besides "home" and "about me"?

    See my answer to 3.

Is the reason I can't see these things because I have not upgraded CSS?

No. You cannot locate information because you don't have the link to the support documentation (please bookmark it) http://en.support.wordpress.com

    Happy Blogging. :)

  17. Thank you so much! I've edited my blog to show the pages.

Now, I have a typekit ID. Where on the dashboard to I place the ID in order for my entire blog page to have that font?

  18. @ldazilma
TypeKIt is a third party provider and they provide their own support. The answer to your question id found in this forum thread http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/typekit-site-title-twenty-ten?replies=10

  19. Here is my blog: http://mistakesweknewweweremaking.wordpress.com/

Is there a way to push the title image up? - basically i've left the title empty (because it has the title in the image) - but now have a gap. Any help would be appreciated!

Would be very useful also to be able to set "featured image" for tags and categories, and not just single posts.

Say I add a featured image to all posts on a particular subject, if I click the tag or category the site header is still the default even though all posts in that category may have the same featured image.

  21. I second mortenblaabjerg. We need featured images for categories NOW :)

Is there a way to make the "About" the author of a post not show on each individual post?

  23. hi, i'd like to second joesimp's question. the perfect trick would be to be able to make the title invisible, push the header image up and make it linkable to the homepage, like with other custom header wordpress themes. i also deleted the title, but I would prefer it to show in the browser tab instead of the link. is it difficult? is there any options we haven't seen which makes this possible without messing with CSS?

    thanks in advance!
    for reference, url is http://allromaniansarevampires.com

  24. @laurieskillern: Go to Users > My Profile, delete the text from the "About you" box, click Update Profile.

And please paste the URL of your blog when asking questions here, or link your username to your blog (as explained in the Sticky 8 Things to Know Before Posting). We usually need that to give a relevant answer.

@joesimp & explorish: Not possible without the paid CSS upgrade. And deleting the blog title is very bad for search engines.

  25. @panaghiotis - thanks for the response. any plans to introduce that option in a revamped theme version, or a similar one (or alternatively, magazine-style)? thanks.

  26. @explorish
Hello there. We Volunteers answering questions on this forum have no idea which features or options may or may not be introduced by Staff. We do not have access to any information that all members do not also have. If you would like to pose your question to Staff then here's the link for you. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

  27. how can i make/add multiple?additional menus aside from my "HOME" and "ABOUT"? And also, I want every menu to have drop downs.thanks

  28. how can i make/add multiple?additional menus aside from my "HOME" and "ABOUT"? And also, I want every menu to have drop downs.

This is the sample blog I've seen : http://thewaterfrontcafe.wordpress.com/

In there, Aside from "HOME" and "About" she added"Menu" "Photo Gallery" "Special Deals and etc.. For every added Menu, there is a drop-down (in "Menu" ).

I just want to know how she did this. thanks

  29. Go to Appearance>Menus. Add whatever pages/categories/custom links you want to the menu. To make drop down menus, make some of your pages/categories/custom links parents of other pages/categories/custom links. You can drag them around in the menu bar once you've added them.
