I've used the the_excerpt(); method on my loop to show only an excerpt on my main page. In some cases the read more link doesn't show. I'm assuming it's instances where the text in the post is shorter than what excerpt limits it to. It seems it assumes since it's showing all the text that it doesn't need the read more link. The problem is there are images in these posts that are not being show, and the read more link is missing to make it obvious there is more to see.
