Reader registration

  1. How can I force readers to register before downloading a pdf from my site?

The blog I need help with is leof.wordpress.com.

  2. Short answer: you can't.

I can think of the following workarounds: 1) Set your site to private and invite only those users you want to have access as viewers. They will be able to download any attachments inserted in any post/page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

    2) Password protect the specific post in which the link to the PDF appears. You could then add a contact form via which readers can request the password from you. Keep in mind, though, that this won't prevent readers from sharing the link with others - someone with the direct link won't need the post password to be able to access it. (Another option would be to not post the link at all and simply have users request it via a contact form and then email the PDF to them directly.)

    3) Similar to 2) but here you password protect the PDF itself. Anyone can download it, but they have to contact you for the password in order to open it.

If none of these are sufficient for you the only other option is to set up a self-hosted WordPress.org website (with all the cost and added responsibility that entails) where you'll be able to install the necessary plugins to allow subscription and members-only areas. http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
