'Reading" settings not working re # of posts per page

  1. Hello all,

Instead of being able to specify "Blog pages show at most XXX posts" - this option is now completely missing from the "Reading" page. My theme is "Bueno", by the way. (I also had a puzzling problem yesterday with the same site (now fixed, thanks) regarding the 'Read More' feature missing as well. It's still missing when I try to insert this, but I can now, thanks to you, insert it using html (which by the way is still not what I'd like to do in future!)

Back to the "Reading" problem: My homepage now has SEVEN posts listed, followed by a button "LOAD MORE POSTS" at the bottom. If I click on that link, previous posts are published in large BOLD fonts. Very odd.

Can somebody tell me how to get that setting to show only four blog posts per page please and thankyou?

    Help!

    Thanks!

  2. Hello there,
Your problem is far from being unique as forum searches attest to. In fact there are many threads that have been posted on this same issue. This also happened to other Bueno users. Staff have introduced “infinite scroll” to some themes including Bueno and will be implementing it on all themes that have a suitable structure for infinite scroll. http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/to-infinity?replies=137

Bueno has a problem now that only Staff can fix. The fonts in titles have become very large. Staff are not available until Monday.
    bueno
    infinite scroll
    infinite scrolling
    disable infinite scrolling

As Bueno is a theme with footer widgets you can try a workaround to regain control over how many posts are displayed on the front page of your blog by disabling infinite scroll. If you have a theme with footer widgets all you need to do is install an empty text widget into any footer area for widgets. Once you have done that your number of posts set on the Settings > Reading page will prevail.
Please try that and see if your other issues are rectified when you do.

  3. Hello timethief and THANKS for your tips.

I tried inserting an empty text widget into one of my footer widgets. Didn't work.

I also went into Settings > Reading and disabled the infinite scroll setting. Also didn't work to affect # of posts still showing on homepage.

Trouble is: the "number of posts in the Settings > Reading page" line is no longer there on "Reading" page. Nothing. Gone. Vanished.

Will wait until Monday, I guess?

Many thanks however in the meantime.
    cheers,
    Carolyn

  4. I'm sorry that did not work for you. At first it did work for some bloggers but then things changed yet again. :( Yes, we are all waiting for Staff to address these issues.

  5. Whoah, hold the phone. I'm not sure what happened, but my homepage is now showing five posts only (better!) and that super-annoying infinite scroll BOLD FONT feature is now gone.

    THX!

  6. I believe Staff are observing everything we bloggers do to shed ourselves of this surprise how do you like it?

    • infinite scroll

feature, and are montioring forum threads and are addressing the issues that they created.

  7. @czthomas
Oops! I don't know what happwned there. Here we go again:
I believe Staff are observing everything we bloggers do to shed ourselves of this surprise how do you like it? infinite scroll feature, and are montioring forum threads and are addressing the issues that they created.

  8. This forum topic is broken for me: someone should tag this thread as "infinite scrolling" which has vanished from my sidebar: no tags visible at all.

  9. Hi Tes:
The Tags are at the bottom left hand corner for me.
    Tags (links ommited)
    blog posts per page
    bueno
    disable infinite scrolling
    infinite scroll
    infinite scrolling
    reading
    title font size change

  10. The thing is, I actually CAN see the potential benefit of this infinite scroll feature, as explained on one of the support links you sent. It does make sense IF staff can solve the serious issue of the freakishly large bold font problems.

I just do not understand why the number of posts per homepage has to be affected at all by enabling or disabling infinite scroll. Again, we live in hope, right?

    :-)

  11. Hi timethief,

of course, some missing tag or something: I didn't think to scroll down down down to find the tags. I see them now. Thanks.

Topic is still broken so I've added a modlook.

I am using Imbalance 2 which offers the option to "load more posts" so readers can choose if they want to continue scrolling on. I too think having an option for infinite scrollin has potential to be useful.

The problem is that folks: users and readers both, don't have a choice in most themes. Lots of people just don't know what is going on with this new feature. Wp.com is rolling infinite scrolling out to more themes, without sufficient testing to know that it breaks things: formatting, blogger options, and some of the themes have no footer widgets so a "reader" can become lost in trying to figure out what is going on.

  12. If I had a rehash the news or sports site or another trype of site and if I was in the WordAds program I would welcome infinite scroll, as it would naturally increase page view stats, increase the number of potential ad clickers, and increase potential income from adclickers. But, that's not the kind of blog I have and it's not the kind of blog I even read. As I don't have a vested interest in what I stated in the first sentence, I have purchased an Ads-Off ugrade and I have disabled "infinte scroll".

  13. This is an update advising that the font size bug in Vueno has beeb fixed. http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/big-letters?replies=3#post-844360

  14. The thing is, I actually CAN see the potential benefit of this infinite scroll feature, as explained on one of the support links you sent. It does make sense IF staff can solve the serious issue of the freakishly large bold font problems.

The issue with large fonts showing up in Bueno was a totally separate bug from infinite scroll, and it was our mistake. Sorry for the troubles it caused you!! It should be all fixed up now.

I just do not understand why the number of posts per homepage has to be affected at all by enabling or disabling infinite scroll.

There are actually a few reasons for this. First, with infinite scroll enabled, there aren't really pages any more and so "posts per page" doesn't make sense. Also, it's a standard way for us to count pageviews in a consistent manner. Plus, we use one number as a baseline to ensure we avoid duplicates. Actually, a lot of thought and care has gone into the addition of the infinite scroll feature.

without sufficient testing to know that it breaks things

We are working out some issues as we go, and we're sorry about the Bueno bug that happened at the same time as the infinite scroll update! Bugs can happen in any updates, and WordPress.com is the kind of place that pushes forward. I think it's one of our most interesting, best qualities.

  15. Thanks for the explanation.

Just to clarify: infinite scroll = good idea AFTER a visitor clicks on the "load more posts" at the bottom of the homepage.

For the homepage, it does makes sense (to some of us!) to be able to specify that we'd like visitors to see three posts on the homepage, or five or whatever, instead of a too-long list of recent posts.

Do you think that there might be any possible way on the Reading option to select something like: "Homepage shows at most XXX posts" - like a default for the homepage only?

    Thx again,
    Carolyn

  16. If you want that level of control then most other blog software will be able to provide it (wordpress.org, blogger, tumblr etc.), but wordpress.com is currently moving towards the facebook/twitter model now where you don't get any choice in how many posts are displayed at once.

Obviously this is not a great fit for longer articles, but they'd prefer you to make frequent short posts (like you would on facebook or twitter) than less frequent long ones, because that way you get more traffic and they get to serve more ads :)

  17. [ugh, I didn't mean to type both 'currently' and 'now'. Pick your favourite and mentally strikethrough the other one.]
