Reading Settings Question

  1. I would like to have ONE article appear on the home page and MULTIPLE excerpts to appear on my monthly archive pages and category pages. I don't seem to be able to do this via the reading settings. I would like for a reader to be able to go to a category or archive page and see 5 excerpts on the page with "Read Full Posts" for each. At the same time, I only want to have the latest article show up on the home page. My posts are fairly long and I don't want readers to have to do a lot of scrolling. I know that I can use "read more" links, but I was hoping not to have to do that.

Is there are way to have SEPARATE settings for the home page and the archive and category pages? Can I do this via Custom CSS?

The blog I need help with is healingproject.wordpress.com.

  2. Is there are way to have SEPARATE settings for the home page and the archive and category pages?

No I'm sorry but there isn't.

Can I do this via Custom CSS?

No, I'm sorry but CSS editing of the CSS stylesheet can only be used to change appearance; it cannot be used to change functionality. We cannot edit templates or themes on our WordPress.com blogs. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

  3. It might be possible to do this with custom CSS but only for newer browsers that support the CSS3 nth-child or nth-last-child pseudo-classes. I'll need a link to your blog to check if it is possible in your current theme.

You'd need to set the displayed posts to 5 and then hide the last 4 on the home page. This wouldn't work in IE at all, Firefox < 3.5, Safari < 3.1, Opera < 9.5 and Chrome < 2. So modern browsers would display as you hope and older ones will have 5 posts on the homepage as well as the archives and categories page. If that sounds like a viable compromise then post your blog link and I'll have a look. Otherwise, as timethief has said, I think you are out of luck.

  4. Timethief and Hallluke,

Thanks for your responses! I have currently compromised at 2 posts and it looks okay, but not ideal. I am glad there is a potential solution on the way, but I know that a lot of people are still using IE and older browsers. Maybe I will just use the "read more" links and have 3 posts everywhere. I will try that and see how it goes.

    I appreciate your help, Debbie

  5. You're welcome from me Debbie. :)
