Redirect for Page Not Found?

  • I recently moved my blog from another host to wordpress (lmfinney.wordpress.com). I used my own domain for the previous site (europetravelogue.com), and my old hosts put in a redirect to my new blog. I’m not yet mapping the url to my new blog.

The redirect works great when someone uses an old link to the main page of my site (www.europetravelogue.com loads as lmfinney.wordpress.com). However, it doesn’t work when they follow an old deep link (europetravelogue.com/blog goes to lmfinney.wordpress.com/blog, which doesn’t exist). Instead, it shows the “Page not found” page.

I know it’s too much to ask that all the old deep links redirect to the exact right post on the new site. However, is it possible to set it up so that they all go directly to the home page instead of the search/”Page not found” page?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • What was on the “blog” page originally? Did you have a static front page on the other blog, and then set the “blog” page as the page to show your posts?

  • Yes, that’s what I had for /blog. I also had other paths that I don’t have now (/journal and /gallery come to mind). I would like it if all of them could redirect to the home page.

  • Redirects will typically only redirect from like to like. You have to set up separate redirects if you want /blog/ to go to domain.com/ . If you were to place your blog at /blog/ as it was on the other site, then it would redirect correctly.

One other suggestion would be to set up a “blog” page and publish it but do not put it into your navigation, and then in the body of that page put a Sorry statement and a link to the main page of the site.

  • OK, thanks. I put those in place for the main subpages on the site, but not for all the deep links.

It’s not perfect, but it’s better.

  • FYI,

I was able to fix the problem more completely by having my former hosts provide more complete redirects. They now redirect europetravelogue.com/blog/*, etc.

I don’t know if this is a general solution that others could do – my former hosts are personal friends.

  • It could be. Some hosts are more accommodating than others, especially if you are not personal friends, and you have moved to a different hosting service.
