Redirecting one wp.com blog to two different wp-org sites

  • Hello there,

We’re upgrading our current blog guerrillatranslation.com to two new self hosted wordpress installs. Currently, the wp hosted blog has posts both in English and Spanish, but we’ve now made two different sites, each with its own domain name: guerrillatranslation.org and guerrillatranslation.es.

We don’t to use a multi-language plug in for several reasons and we would like to buy the redirect upgrade, but we face the following questions:

As “half” of the language-specific static content and its posts has to be redirected to one site and the other half to the other, could we buy the upgrade and set it for guerrillatranslation.es and then individually redirect the “other half” to the English-language site (gt.org)?

Does the upgrade allow for tweaking redirects in a per-post basis?

Does it allow to redirect to two different sites? (The permalink structure would remain the same)

If the redirect upgrade isn’t right for us, what woud you recommend

Thanks for your assistance, we look forward to your answers.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I do not think the site redirect option will do what you are asking it to. It really is only designed to redirect to a single site with the same URL structure as the existing posts. There is no customization of redirects available.

  • Hi @rootjosh thanks.

So here’s what we’ve come up with
    – Buying the redirect upgrade to redirect to one of the sites
    – Use thi plug in https://wordpress.org/plugins/redirection/
It has ‘Custom ‘pass-through’ redirections allowing you to pass a URL through to another page, file, or website. This way we could “hand redirect” whatever goes to the “other” language site.

One question. Does the site redirect also port over your current subscribers? We’ve drafted two blog posts telling our readers about the new sites, but we originally thought that we’d publish it in the wp-hosted site. Can we still publish something in the “old” site after we implement the redirect upgrade, or should we just do it in the new sites (trusting that our subscribers will be notified)?

  • Once you have your new site set up and connected to Jetpack, I can help you migrate your followers/
