   Is it possible to remove the header on all pages except the home page, so that the slider doesn't disappear? I would would then place the name with css as it is on the home page on all other pages. I am nervous about deleting the header because of the warning of not being able to recover it (under appearance, header)

   I think this answers your question by adding a background image to just the home page:

   Note that if you were to delete the header, you could always add it back as long as you have a copy of the image, so you shouldn't worry.
