Removing the scrollbar from the post editor one of the worst "improvements" yet

  1. We'll get into the many reasons why it's a bad idea in good time. Talk amongst yourselves.

The blog I need help with is songbook1.wordpress.com.

  2. I don't know what you are referring to. I do not use the post editor at https://wordpress.com/post/ ever. I use the post editor on my own blog's dashboard only. Perhaps posting a screenshot of what your refer to will illuminate what you mean. You can use http://snag.gy/ to share screenshots.

  3. The vertical scroll bar is gone in the editor.

There is another thread talking about this: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/content-area-for-posts-is-no-longer-a-text-area-it-expands-as-you-type-now?replies=6

  4. Timethief,

It's nearly six years since I began using WordPress.com. As far as I remember during those six years there has always been an internal scrollbar in every page and post. Until today. There's a scrollbar at the far right but it's not as efficient as the internal one. Oddly enough, though, the internal post editor scrollbar still appears briefly after opening a post, for about a second on my PC, before it disappears.

  5. @musicdoc1
    Hi again,
I have been here answering questions for over 8 years now. I use only the editor on my own blog's dashboard. Is that the post editor you are referring to or not?

  6. Timethief,

How do you edit a previously published post or page from the dashboard? Yes, I often begin at the dashboard to locate a post or page: dashboard > "all posts" or"all pages" > title search

  7. I don't really understand your question. I see "Quickdraft" in my dashboard, but I've never used it. Where's the post editor in the dashboard?

  8. @musicdoc1
There are many threads with questions to answer and I don't have time to go to my blog and figure out what you are referring to. I still don't know if you mean the post editor at https://wordpress.com/post/ or if you mean this one http://songbook1.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php

I'll tag this thread for Staff assistance. Another Volunteer may answer prior to Staff but I tagged the thread so it will not fall through the cracks and escape attention. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

  9. From the dashboard or other internal page, under Posts, Add New is the blog editor that I use. The text box scroll bar is gone and there is no tiny box to resize it.

  10. Here's a screenshot I made when the scroll bar went missing a few months ago.

  11. @dandelionsalad
    Thanks!

  12. dandelionsalad,

Yes, I use add new as well. But that doesn't apply to previously published posts or pages.

Right, the resizing tool is gone as well. It's absurd for large posts that you have to have the entire thing open at all times, now, when editing.

I'm sure I'll get used to these "improvements," but gaining a fixed (or "sticky" as I saw it referred to somewhere) toolbar at the expense of the internal scrollbar and the resizer, doesn't seem like an advantageous exchange. The toolbar could have fixed without ditching the scrollbar and resizer.

  13. Months ago?

  14. Timethief,

Have never used or even been aware of https://wordpress.com/post/ . Wouldn't know where to find it. Always use post and page editors located through my own blog dashboards.

  15. Oh, I agree with you, musicdoc1. I post many very long posts and do a lot of editing and not having a text box scroll bar makes my job that much harder, especially for my right hand.

Oftentimes I need to turn off comments on older posts, so now I have to scroll down a very long way to get to the Comments box to do this.

This is not an improvement whatsoever, in my opinion.

The question is: is this something permanent or a technical glitch?

  16. @musicdoc1
    @dandelionsalad
If you don't mind me saying so it's my experience that changes are rarely, if ever, rolled back. I have been on the never ending WordPress.com rollercoaster ride here for over 8 years, and I no longer get worked up about anything. Life is short and WordPress.com is on continuous rollout, without any announcements of what's going on or why it's going on. So I just walk away from my blogs when changes are being made. After all the complaints are finished, and Staff finally provide documentation for what has changed and how to cope with the changes, then I resume blogging again.

  17. Yes, at the end of March until sometime in April, the scroll bar went missing for me and a couple other bloggers. It was a technical glitch that eventually got fixed.

This problem is a new and a bit different problem.

  18. The question is: is this something permanent or a technical glitch?

Right. The fact that the scrollbar displays momentarily before disappearing suggests that they might be working on it.

  19. That is happening when I edit a post, too. It did the same thing when it was a glitch a few months ago. It would appear for a second or less then disappear.

  20. @ all,

Correct me if I am mistaken but are you-all talking about the corner on the bottom right so that you can make the editing windows (visual or text) nice wide and long so one can read a lot of things above that you have written and still see wide open clean space to add more to a post, page, or even on these forums.

I may be misunderstanding, but the "scrollbar" is still there, but without the option of changing the size of the window to write in seems to be a further "dumbing-down" of how to write, think, create on this platform. Please tell me I'm mistaken about what we now see even from the real dashboard!

  21. The question is: is this something permanent or a technical glitch?

I don't know and that's why I tagged the thread for Staff. Staff work through all forum threads tagged for their attention and through all email support tickets in order of datestamps and timestamps – first posted first served, as would be expected.

How long it takes to clear the threads and support tickets depends on how many Happiness Engineers are working on them at any given point in time. It also depends on how complex the issues in each thread and ticket are are.

Don’t bump your thread because it’s not in your best interest to post to it after it has been tagged for Staff help. Every time we post the timestamp moves forward and it takes longer to get a Staff response.

  22. Note: the little bars on the bottom right to change the size of the editing window still function here in these forums. What thought process would eliminate that option for posting on wp.com blogs???? I dislike posting text in a postage stamp sized tiny rectangle.

Or perhaps I'm (with much hope) missing the point???

  23. sorry tt,
maybe my eye infection is causing me more trouble? It's scary having visual problems.

  24. @1tess
I'm afraid to find out what guys are referring to lest it becomes the final straw that prompts me to move back to self-hosting, or even to Blogger. Blogging there is so freaking easy compared to the hoop jumping we have to do here due to the continual changes we are surprised with.

    Twenty-eleven theme; using IE9

went to add a new post this afternoon and found that when writing in the white editor box that the text moves up behind the toolbar while the vertical scroll bar in the white editing box no longer appears. The cursor also moves BEHIND the toolbar so that I can't see what I'm typing as I'm typing it.

made sure 3rd party cookies enabled; cleared browser cache; tried different zoom levels, including 100 percent; installed chrome and found that the same thing happened; tried text and visual views

no solution from taking these actions

I also noticed that the "word count" box, which normally stays at the bottom of the editing box now seems to float at the bottom of the screen. the insert media page also used to display two columns of pictures but now just shows a single column

Now, here's the odd part. When I start the blog in IE compatibility view, which messes up the page view by moving the right hand column down on the home page, i see that the add new post page works as it should.

The problem is almost like the toolbar buttons of the add new post page are fixed in place, but somehow the editing box is floating around as I scroll up and down the page to add tags and preview posts.

I've never messed with any of the coding revealed by the IE9 F12 key.

Did a file or line of HTML or CSS get corrupted?

The blog I need help with is saboteur365.wordpress.com.

I am experiencing the same issue with the missing internal scrollbar. (My blog is http://thenakedlistener.wordpress.com.)

I have a screenshot of my today's interface at http://snag.gy/rYAXM.jpg.

Would appreciate someone here tag this thread for staff attention for an authoritative answer if it's a glitch or a new feature.

Thank you to all and best wishes.

  28. 1tess,

    Yes.

I may be misunderstanding, but the "scrollbar" is still there...

There is a scrollbar and a window lengthening tool in the comments window of this forum. But the same features are absent from WordPress.com post and page editors as of today. Removed sometime today I believe.

Hi. As of 30-45 minutes ago, I am experiencing the same problem. The ability to modify the size of the post editing box disappeared, and the editing box is now the size of the entire post.

I had something similar to this happen a couple years ago, when the post editor size was inadvertently set to a large number. The link to that closed topic is http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/where-is-my-normal-new-post-page/page/2?replies=44.

In addition, I've got one other weird thing happening. Posts are showing up in the edit box in visual mode vs. the typical HTML mode. That's probably something different. Thanks, John.

  30. musicdoc1,
I see it. Guess I'm having trouble believing it. ≥^!^≤
Or at least understanding the logic of it? It could be a mistake? I hope!
