Thought I'd ask here before contacting support.
I renamed some categories but when I checked the link, it directed it to the old name and even the url shows the old category name. How do I change it without creating a new category? The # of posts in the category is HUGE. Trying to avoid manually go thru them all to apply another category.
In short: Renamed categories but the url doesn't reflect change. Help?
Correct, changing the category name will not change the category slug (the URL version of the category name). We currently do not allow users to change the category slug.

* if it's temporary, then when it's going back to work normally, as it's expected by everyone (but the staff, of course)?

Indeed as sure as heck want an answers to the questions the OP and options pose.
(1) To whom do the categories that I create belong? Are they not mine ?
(2) And how dare anyone muck with the name choices that I make for my categories by blocking my ability to change the category name slug if and when I change the category name?
(3) How does my blog benefit from this malarkey?

IMHO Joesph should allow the developers to step up to the plate and come clean about these changes. After all Joseph is not a corporate decision maker and he's not a "public relations manager" either, is he? In this case he's just a messenger.

Before I do something rash like attempting to manually fix this, is there a workaround for moving blocks of posts from one category to another in the works? If not, please consider adding this function for sanity's sake.

I don't think moving posts from one category to another is a problem, it's just when you rename a category. You will have to do it manually post by post though.

Since "changing the category name will not change the category slug", the only solution I can think of is to create another category with the right post slug then apply it to the posts stuck under the old post slug like you wrote "manually, post by post". Which isn't practical.
So in other words: I'm looking for a batch function to apply the new post slug to posts stuck under the old post slug.
Sorry, no batch processing is available for changing categories.

tedious, but may be just a bit less tedious than to do it manually post by post:
Export WXR --> Edit with 'Search/Replace All' for 'Old Cat' with a 'New Cat' --> Remove 'Old Cat' via Manage Cats --> Import WXR
test this batch on a spare blog first -- may result into complete mess, though!

Why is it that we cannot have a wordpress.com means/tool of changing blocks of categories in bulk? I asked for this last year and I'm wondering if it's even being considered. Can you enlighten me please?

I don't even care about this too much (yet), but I want to keep bumping every now and then until someone answers timethief, haha
If you can rename your categories, you need to be able to change the slug. It is exactly the same principle as changing your post slug when you change the title of the post.
If we can't change the slug because Matt thinks another input field would clutter up the dashboard, it would actually be better if they didn't let us rename the categories, since at least that way we'd be guaranteed an appropriate URL.
