Resizing editing window

    Hi! I'm having trouble maintaining a decent sized editor page. Whenever I open a draft post the window is huge, as in the corner to pull and resize is several screen pages down, so when I get to the bottom of my text, the toolbar with fonts, format, spell check, is out of sight of the text I am working on. If I go to the trouble of resizing the window, after I save, it reverts to the huge window. When I start a new post, again, it is huge! How do I fix it, so that it is short and stays short after saving?

    The blog I need help with is indieethos.wordpress.com.

    Go to Settings->Writing and set the size there. I find 40 works well.

    Hi! Thanks for writing back, but I do not see a re-sizing option there. I only see these options:

    Site Title
    Tagline
    E-mail Address
    Timezone
    Date Format
    Time Format
    Week Starts On
    Language
    Snow

    Ok, that's the "general" section. However, the writing section, again does not have the sizing of window there. There are the only options I saw there:

    Formatting
    Default Post Category
    Default Link Category

    The setting on the Writing page was removed some time ago now but not to worry. Move your mouse to the lower right hand corner of the text box (you will see two diagonal lines). Your mouse should change to the Resize pointer (double arrows). Click and drag and you can re-size the box to whatever size you like.

    Hi, timethief. Yes, tried that, but every time I save it reverts to the huge window. Also, when I create a new post the default seem to be this huge, unwieldy window (it takes 4 page downs to get to the end of it). Thanks for your help again, guys, but still seeking a solution...

    If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

    Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported. To disable see > http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

    If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com please do these four things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache:

    http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

    2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

    3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

    4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

    If it’s still happening, let us know exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ and also post any error reports you get.

    It seems a simpler way. I have the same problem, but have not yet tried these solutions.

    This is the solution given by Zandyring:

    I was just logged in as you, and that is probably the largest text edit window I've ever seen! I made it much smaller and saved a blank draft. I started a new draft (that I didn't save) and the window looked like it kept my sizing. I logged out, logged back in, and started a new draft, and it looks like it took!

    I tried, but it did not work.
    I'll try again later.

    I actually got around to trying clearing the cache (I was in Firefox). I cleared everything after resizing window, and it worked! (thanks, Timethief!) I was logged into my work computer and I use Firefox. We'll see if it's fixed on Chrome when I open my laptop tonight.

    I still have that very long editing window. I found the cookies, but how can I know which ones have to be deleted? And if I delete all, won't I be asked for passwords all over the place and thereby paralyze myself and make "the other user" very unhappy?

    I tend to delete all my cookies and clear my cache regularly. It helps my browser run faster. I do have to remember my passwords with regularity, but that makes my browsing more secure anyway!

    Who is the other user you mention? I'm not sure I understand the question there.

    You can select to delete any WordPress cookies you see, but you may find a faster experience in general if you delete all. I leave that distinction to you, however.

    I will try. The other user is my husband. He is of the gentle kind, but he knows less about computers than I and so, if there is some spook, he always suspects that I have been trying out something new. I will try deleting the cookies, but tomorrow, not today.

    It has not yet worked; the window is still very long, but I will try again tomorrow.
    Now I am curious to see what happens when I try to log into my mail service which is itself in perpetual trouble. Maybe I am their only remaining customer.

    It works!!! It works.

    Before it did not work because I made the mistake of first resizing and then getting rid of the cookies, but then I realized it had to be the other way around.

    (A very absurd thing did happen. When I came back in and after I had started to re-size the trial editing window, suddenly there was an alert to tell me I was not logged in and my draft could not be saved. )

    I'm so glad it's working for you again!

    You may want to remember to clear your cookies every few months or so, but you should be all set now :)

    Yes there is a bug and yes it's annoying. It affects all WordPress.com users and WordPress.org users who have upgraded their sites. The developers are definitely aware of this issue. http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/23042 I assume the fix may not happen until the next WordPress upgrade. Is that correct or not?

    In the trac ticket the milestone is 3.5.1, which would be the next pushed upgrade, yes. The transition to WP.com from WP.org would happen after that.
