   WOrpress is separate db and install on my server for same site.

   SMF forums is a separate db and instll on my server for same site.

   Is there a registration for WordPress that requires Admin approval after user submits profile data?

   Basically, forums is to encourage users to discuss topics.
   Admin/moderators will screen forum users to approve those users join the Blog after they are satisfied users will submit viable content for blogging.

   Having a non-accessible login for users on the WordPress would probably work as well. This way admin/moderators could create user account for invited persons. The problem with that is... I'd like to allow user registrations so they can comment on blog postings, yet I only want to allow post edits and creation from authorized users.

   There is a "please read me first before posting" pink sticky post at the head of this forum I think you may have overlooked http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=3700&replies=1

   If yours is a self hosted or web hosted blog then you have posted in the wrong forum. The forum for self hosted blogs is over here http://wordpress.org/support
