This isn't really urgent because I'm not planning to cancel it any time soon, but if and when I decide to not auto-renew myblog.com, does it revert to myblog.wordpress.com on its own? Is there a process involved? Thanks!

Yes, it reverts on its own. You only get into trouble if you still own the domain but the mapping upgrade expires.
It reverts to the .wordpress.com URL on its own and every URL is broken so when clicked anywhere on the internet the links will produce a 404 (page not found). Read this so your clearly understand what I am saying to you > OMG! My Domain Name Expired
