Scroll up & down

  1. Does anybody know why we have to "scroll down" when opening a blog instead of scrolling up?

Why are posts added to the TOP instead of the BOTTOM?

Remember how a real bookmark helps us keep our place in a book we are reading?

Why can't I place a "real bookmark" on my blog that would tell my browser:

"Go the the LAST line of the last post on my blog and fill my monitor screen form the BOTTOM up with my last five posts."

Isn't that the way you (used to) work with your old paper diary and have the option of starting a new post?

Or "Go the FISRT line of the last post on my blog and fill my monitor screen form the TOP down with my last post and place the other four last posts ABOVE."

I guess that's what people did when they wanted to take a quick look at where they left out, the last time they wrote something.

Did a lot people, who write from left to right, ever started filling a diary, notebook or whatever form the last page UP, so that the last thing they wrote would always be on TOP?

On every computer that I have used with a scroll bar it goes both UP and DOWN. How about you?

Please pass this message to the people at Microsoft and others who keep designing new versions of Office suites where saved documents always open on the first line of the first page, when what you want to do is continue where you left out, at the bottom of page 20.

  2. 1. Blogs aren't books. They always start with the latest entry. Can you imagine having to click through (say) 20 pages of posts just to read the latest on what a user has read? Blogs have always worked like this. Every single one I have ever visited has the latest post(s) and then an archive. If you don't like it then there are plugins available for NONE WP.COM hosted blogs that will switch the post order. I guarantee that your readers will moan about having to use a shed load of clicks to get to the latest post.

    2. Bookmarks: Every post has a title. Every title is a link to the post. If you view the single post then most themes have the option to go to the next or previous post. Save that link in your bookmarks and you are sorted.
    3. Diaries: Do you open your diary and start reading at the beginning every time?

    4. Do you know how to use the keyboard? Then try pressing CTRL+END in your Word document and see what happens.

    5. Passing the message on to Microsoft? Why? See the first three comments. If YOU want to pass it on to MS then try starting at http://www.microsoft.com rather than an unrelated forum.

I am particularly worried about that link that you have put in your profile. I haven't clicked as it looks very very dodgy. Are you a wp.com blogger or a spammer?

Does this post sound iflammatory? Sorry. Demanding posts like yours get my back up.

  3. Agreed. I'd add a modlook tag, but for whatever reason I can't click in the space.

  4. always open on the first line of the first page, when what you want to do is continue where you left out, at the bottom of page 20.

    Um, CTRL-End maybe?

edit: I'm sitting at it here as well while I send in a request to return the profile link to staff.

Lots of things come to mind that seem to set off flags in my mind but nothing positive yet.

And, granted, it is a legit question.

Blogs were designed to flow bottom to top. That's how they were created. There are some platforms that allow them to flow the other way but most definiations of blogs are with the latest posts on the top.

Sorry if you don't agree with that but gotta admit that you're in the minority on this one.

  5. I replied through feedback to this - the wikipedia definition works.

  6. Thank you all for your kind and learned responses. It is always a pleasure to hear from highly educated and respectful people.

I’m so glad that finally someone pointed out to me that “blogs aren’t books”. You have to be an IT consultant to be able to figure that out and tell it to ignorant folks like me.

I learned a lot from Mr. Cornell Finch: That blogs “always start with the latest entry.” That I can’t “imagine having to click through (say) 20 pages of posts just to read the latest on what a user has read?”

It even improved my command of the English language. Now I know how to say “just to read the latest on what a user has read.”

I had absolutely no idea that “Blogs have always worked like this.” I thought it was just a passing fad started by some weird teenager out of his parents’ garage.

One can see how well travelled Mr. Finch is. “Every single [blog] I have ever visited has the latest post(s) and then an archive.” I have NEVER seen a blog with the archive AFTER the latest post(s), but I was delighted to find out that perhaps every blog has a last post. It’s marvelous how much IT has advanced scientific knowledge. The existence of a true archive can be easily verified by a detailed visit to Mr. Finch’s blog. Please remember to time yourself and report how fast you found it. There’s an entry into the Guinness Book looming out there.

What exactly are plugins? Does that have anything to do with plumbing or wiring?

Dazzling the beauty, the flow of “available for NONE WP.COM hosted blogs.” It’s amazing how much one can learn from a true Master.

Mr. Finch is again absolutely right. It is not my desire or intention to induce any sort of moaning on my readers.

“Shed load of clicks.” How do you manage to come up with such beautiful metaphors? All I get when turning my wheel to scroll is absolute silence.

And this is just from lesson n.º 1. I am so grateful I can barely wait to be able to read, understand and learn from the other four plus the closing remarks.

Blogger or spammer? How about your worst nightmare?

I wonder who is going to be next.

P.S. Do you want to have a good time? Write more intelligent, well thought and well written responses like the ones above.

  7. /me sighs. Gosh. A troll. In our forum. Aren't we lucky.

    How about your worst nightmare?

Am I married to you then?

All I get when turning my wheel to scroll is absolute silence.

Can you turn your scroll wheel to get to a previous page then? Wow. I've got to get me one of those.

You started a thread under "ideas" about changing the entire blogosphere to suit your somewhat selfish requirements and then ask us to contact Microsoft about MS Word. Not exactly a good way to get people to further your cause is it.

I also note that your still have that dodgy link in your profile.

  8. Building a wp reputation as a troll are you? How boring ...

  9. Well vapmachado, do YOU want to have a good time? You might consider taking the opportunity to stop making such an ass of yourself in the forum.

  10. Bring them on. Make my day.

    Thanks.

Yes, it is me that's added the modlook tag.

  12. He's not even very good at bing a troll if he's picking on you instead of me.

  13. BTW Friendly (referring to the link you posted) isn't a problem. Look at some of the other threads I have helped many many people.

To you? You have given me no reason to be friendly.

  14. Oh yes, one more question:

Do you have a wordpress.com blog? I'd love to see it. After all, you can see all of ours. We aren't hiding. I clicked the link in your profile and it just takes me to your CV.

  15. Gee lookie, lookie what I found http://vapmachado.wordpress.com/

  17. Golly, are those affiliate links I see?

  18. Gosh I couldn't say for sure with my vision being as poor as it is ... and all .. so staff will have to make the call.
