I'd like to be able to have readers search my posts by categories. I am using the 'search' widget but all it seems to do is search the content of each post.
I've heard of using hidden text HTML to do this but that seems to be an illegal move.
Would using tags help with any of this?
Any help or advice to be able to do this? I'm pretty green to all of this so anything would be helpful!

Using tags will not help: tags and categories work interchangeably here.
I recommend you use Google, and search
Searchterm (eg "pandas drawing butterfly portraits") site:yoursite.wordpress.com/category/whatever
