Sharing on LinkedIn

  1. You can Share on Twitter, you can share on Facebook, You can share on StumbleUpon, Reddit, and Digg.

You should be able to share on LinkedIn.

    On your Sharing page
    https://YOURBLOGNAMEHERE.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=sharing
you can pick the sharing services you wish to offer on your blog. For those of us whos blogging subject is relevant to their careers, LinkedIn needs to be added.

The LinkedIn sharing URL is pretty easy:
    http://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?url=http%3A%2F%2Fdlairman.wordpress.com%2F2011%2F13%2Fhe-who-sells-first-loses%2F&mini=true&source=WorkingItOut&title=Social+Media+Rules+-+"He+Who+Sells+First+Loses"

    Breaking it down:
    http://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?url=
then your blog post URL, with %3A substituting for : and %2F substituting for /
    &mini=true&source=
then your blog's name (I took out the spaces, but you could substiture + or %20 for the space)
    &title=
then your title with + substituting for space (you can also use %20)

Scripting this should be a breeze (grab the url of the article, a little string substitution, and voila, you have a sharing link for LinkedIn. All you'll need then is permission to use the logo for the button (like they'd turn that down)

"What do you think, sirs?" (MST3K)

The blog I need help with is dlairman.wordpress.com.

  2. Adding Your Own Service
If you would like to add a sharing service to your blog that is not available in the standard set, you can add it using the Add a new service link in the Available Services section. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/#adding-your-own-service

As Staff do not post into these threads frequently and are busy with other work you can use this link to contact them, if you wish. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

  3. @dlairdman: Hi. I'm not sure if you are aware of this already but for the sake of clarity, yes you can add LinkedIn to the existing set of sharing services. No need to wait for staff intervention:

  4. @airodyssey - Thanks!

    Just added it!

  5. @airodyssey
    Bookmarking!

  6. @dlairman: You're welcome :-)

    @timethief: Good :-D

  7. @airodyssey
Hopefully I'll be able to find the bookmark when required. In my last computer catastrophe I lost data. The discs which had been used to create bank-ups were corrupt. I'm on week two of data reconstruction now. :(

  8. @timethief: Whenever I saw someone saying that they were bookmarking a thread, I thought they meant to add it to their WordPress.com profile favorites (which is what I do). So even when away from home they'd have access.

  9. A minor question related to this discussion.

I went and got the URL referenced in airodyssey's earlier post. There is jst one thing. How about the icon? I had used http://www.linkedin.com for the ico. When previewing, it didn't look right. Right now, I got it in a Share drop box.

What did I miss? My site is http://www.inspiration-point.org. Thanks.

  10. Sorry, I didn't notice this was in the wrong forum. Thought I was in Support. I'll repost it there.

  11. It worked like a charm for me! Thank you so much @dlairman.

One thing I would point out is that I used a general form for the post URLs and titles instead of a specific one so it could work for all of my posts:

    http://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?url=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.fishbowlinventory.com%2F&mini=true&source=%post_full_url%&title=%post_title%

I used %post_full_url% and %post_title% at the end, and they work great for me.

    Thanks again for your help!

  12. The URL got cut off, so here it is again:

    http://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?url=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.fishbowlinventory.com
    %2F&mini=true&source=%post_full_url%&title=%post_title%

  13. I absolutely love the MST3K reference, by the way. I got a good chuckle out of that. "Back to you, Joel!"

  14. Actually my solution didn't work. I'm able to share the main blog URL, but I can't link to individual blog posts. I wonder how to fix this.

  15. I figured it out! You don't need all of that extra HTML. All you need is %post_url%

I used this and it works perfectly:

    http://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?url=%post_url%

    Try it!
