Should I purchase WordPress.com Business for a video website?

  1. I have been reading online at WordPress.com and elsewhere for information and reviews to determine whether WordPress.com Business is right for my specific needs. I need to create a relatively simple website for a non-profit organization that does not want to hire a web developer. This website will be made up of roughly 80% video content to be uploaded directly from our computers. Other content will be photos and text. Embedding videos is a must. Is WordPress.com Business right for this large amount of video? Any help is greatly appreciated!

  2. The Business upgrade may be overkill if all you want to do is upload videos directly to your website.

In order to do so you would need the VideoPress upgrade and most likely also a space upgrade at some point if your videos are numerous and/or large. The free 3GB of storage is fine to start with. See here:

  3. We will need 200GB, or more, with the space upgrade. The website will be a large archive of videos. It seems as though the Business upgrade is not much more than that per year and it has unlimited space, no? Is there something I'm missing?

  4. See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/
For the business bundle see http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/wordpress-business/

Note that none of the plans allow you to run advertising or to upload your own themes or plugins. WordPress.com blogs cannot be equipped for eCommerce transactions. If you need a site that requires a custom theme or plugins — e.g., if you want to be able to sell things directly from your site, or if you want to install discussion forums — a self-hosted WordPress site might be right for you. See here for the comparison http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  5. Thanks for your response. We don't need our own themes, plugins, eCommerce, or anything else. We don't want a self-hosted site because we are not hiring a developer. We are simply uploading many, many videos to create an asthetically pleasing video archive and I'm trying to determine the best option for that through WordPress.com.

justjennifer recommended not using the Business package, and instead get VideoPress with a space upgrade, however I'm still trying to determine if that is the best choice based on the specifics about our large video content needs.

The space upgrade limit is 200GB and we will need that, or more. It seems as though the Business upgrade is not much more than that per year and it has unlimited space, no? Is there something I'm missing?

  6. In addition, can videos on our WordPress site can be embedded on social media sites like Facebook?

    This is very important.

  7. No.

Quite simply: you should use YouTube for this. YT has its own audience, which could easily exceed the viewership of a Wp.com blog. And YT videos are easily embedded into WordPress.com blogs and any other blogging platform. It also eliminates your need for 200 gb of storage.
