Should WordPress Allow Adsense?

  • I know WordPress Team will be pissed off but I was wondering how many people actually do want and how many people do not want adsense in their website.
So, I have set up that same freaking luckypolls to see the opinion of most of the wordpress uers.
Do help me generate the statistics…if you may by voting for one of the options on the sidebar of my site.

    WordPress Team,
Sorry for bothering with adsense issue again, but its just for my personal use…

(ps: This is for information purpose only)

  • I’d say no.

I’ve got an account setup, but I’m not going to bother using it again until I go from wordpress.com to .org and make my own blog from scratch

  • A no from me as well. If I want ads, I’d host it myself.

  • Well, its totally your own discretion. So far, only 2 people have clearly said no in the poll while 3 people said yes, 2 said yes with a fee and 1 was confused…

Seems, we are going to win…hehe :)

  • No. And I don’t even want the test ads on my blog. :(

  • This is an old, old issue. Demand is such that they are going to have to allow ads eventually. It will almost certainly be a paid upgrade though, in order to deter sploggers and make it financially worth their while.

  • This indeed is a very old and very tired issue. Automattic is a business and not a democracy or a vote driven social club.
Ads on blogs will probably eventually be allowed as a paid upgrade. And how do we know? Matt said so.

What are our future plans? There have been a fair number of requests for an Adsense widget so it’s still on our mind as a paid upgrade. Before that, however, we will probably do something that you have more control over such as Amazon http://amazon.com/ or Goodstorm http://goodstorm.com/ integration.

Here’s the link to the whole statement.

IMO these unauthorized pseudo polls on the forum and elsewhere are a waste of time that can actually confuse newcomers. For example I believe there are 3 time wasting dead horse beating threads going on this now … sheesh …

And just how much money per month are those who are constantly pushing the pennies for ads agenda willing to pay to have their blogs “monetized”? Why zero, nothing, zip, nada, of course: they want a free ride.

And do they have alternatives now? Sure they do. There’s nothing stopping the squeaky wheels from rolling on over to wordpress.org and self hosting a free downloaded blog template that they can cover with ads. Or they can hire a web host to do it for them but there’s the real rub … they would have to spend money to make money, just as everyone else in business does. And they are not prepared to do that.

Let’s turn our attention to our blogging and let Matt take care of his business. If he wants any more opinions on how to run his business I’m sure he’ll ask for them. :)

  • wank: Why would they have to allow it at some point? The blogger will just have to decide between the amazing features and intuitive blogging that is wordpress and the less simple , bug ridden option of competitiors if they want to have ads.

Sure, making money through my blog is great, but I don’t like ads and after trying both wordpress and blogger, I know which one I prefer.

  • wank: Why would they have to allow it at some point?

    1. To shut up all the people who post here asking for it on a weekly basis.
    2. To shut up all the people who think it’s unfair that Scoble can have affiliate ads but if they do the same they’ll get their blog deleted and lose all their content.
    3. To make money for themselves.

Don’t underestimate 3. Automattic doesn’t have all that many alternative sources of revenue. We already have ads on the global tags pages and they’re also served on the blogs themselves to people coming in from Google. On top of the money they’d be getting from people wanting the upgrade, any adsense widget would probably alternate Automattic’s adsense ads with the user’s own, so they’d get a percentage of the overall revenue. Also, users making small amounts of money with adsense might well be more willing/able to fork out for other upgrades.

Flip the question round and ask why wouldn’t they allow ads, and the possible reasons don’t really stand up. Sploggers would be deterred by having to pay for the upgrade (why pay to host ads on wordpress.com when you can have them on blogspot for free?). People who don’t like ads wouldn’t have to have them on their blogs, and thanks to the friend surfer they wouldn’t have to see them on other people’s blogs either. And it’s not because Matt personally thinks it’s tacky, since if that were the case we wouldn’t have ads anywhere on the site.

The ToS states that ad policy can be changed at any time without notice. This means that Automattic could decide to slap ads on everyone’s blogs tomorrow. I’m not saying they’re going to, I’m saying that they could, and if you signed up any time since March that’s what you agreed to.

  • This means that Automattic could decide to slap ads on everyone’s blogs tomorrow

    This is scary :(

  • Timethief,
Don’t be too rude and harsh with your remarks. You can always put your views in a more polite way.n Please…for your kind information, we don’t want names from you….we got our own names…squeaky wheels huh??? Learn to write in a forum first…

There are a lot of benefits of using .com of wordpress and not .org because you can get all the support out here. Any problems are well-discussed and it has a better environment. It is easy to work with .com in limited time. Paying for upgrades is not something I have denied. My suggestion was a trial period of free upgrade to adsense-allowed site after which the users can see if they really want it.
I have initiated adsense in my blogspot account and it clearly proved I wouldn’t mind paying some bucks for adsense in wordpress coz wordpress is by far the best platform.

So, do not tamper in if you don’t like to discuss about it.We are not here to hear you pouring your venom on us all. Moreover, where the heck did I say that I want my poll to help the wordpress team make a decision? I totally said it is for my personal use.

Again, don’t bark if you don’t want to make a positive contribution…out of all the replies, yours’ shows the utter disrespect to the thread. Nobody has started calling names…you are the one…and of course..the omnipresent.

  • Actually DN, I think your reply is kind of harsh too. I am absolutely positive that TT was referring to …

Awe no, you know what. To reply any further is going to bring me down to your level.

This is supposed to be a support forum. Not a forum for discussion of personal information.

Please can this thread be locked before it gets any further out of hand?

  • cornell,
If I don’t get upto that level, next time she’s going to feel superior, act superior. At least I have refrained from calling names. So, I just meant to make sure she understands it. She is no different to any other bloggers out here and she has no right to call names.

I am sure wordpress team understands this.

  • If you want to discuss Adsense (even after reading all the other threads on this) then please do so constructively.

If you do not – you risk your post being deleted.
    Be nice :)

  • Mark,
Sorry about being a bit too bitchy on this issue but as I said at the beginning, I wanted to know the opinion. And, I am not forcing anyone to agree or disagree with me. Few people started replying to the thread with their own opinions. And, all of a sudden, here comes Timethief blabbering with names I never have had in my life.

Had it been some authorized person from wordpress team asking me to stop talking about this issue, I’d have of course stopped it. But, she is just like any other bloggers out here. So, I could not hold on to my nerves after looking at all the names she has given me and others who advocated for adsense.

I have been using wordpress for the last 8 months or so and I have been enjoying it. It is never a surprise that people want more when they have more…

Its just that I do not want to be dominated by a fellow blogger and I would not entertain name-calling either…Again, with all due respect…

  • I know alot of Blogger blogs with a hundred times more traffic than me that have told me they would move here in a heartbeat if they could have ads and modify the templates.

  • nosy: if they have lots of traffic, can’t they qualify for the vip blogs?
