sidebar list

  1. I'd like to add a sidebar on my blog with a list of "good reads" or books I've read. Is there a way to do this? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

    thanks!

The blog I need help with is halibedragons.wordpress.com.

  2. The blog linked to your username wearing the Twenty Ten theme has a sidebar. To create such a list and display it in your sidebar you can use a text widget.

  3. I tried that. It isn't exactly what I'm looking for. I've seen the list sidebar on other blogs (of course now I can't find one for example). Each entry in the list is separate somehow. Does that make sense? Do you have any idea what I'm talking about?

  4. Do you want these book titles to be linked to anything?
Do you want these book titles to link to another site?
Do you want them to link to posts in your own site?
Do you want to link them to images?
    Please expand.

  5. Thank you for doing this with me. I don't know right now if I want them linked to anything. See how under "categories" there is a bulleted list? But the word category is bold? I'd like a running list of books I've read or am reading that I could maybe write a sentence or two summary of.

  6. Id you plan to publish a series of books your are reading then create a Category called something like "Good Reads". When you create blog posts about those books then assign the Category to the posts before publishing them. If you want to create sub-categories under parent categories in a hierarchical structure you can do that as well. Note that there is no data for a Categories widget to display until you publish a post in the Category.

  7. Just to be clear about this Posts and Pages are different.

  8. I'm going to try that. Thanks!

  9. You're welcome. :)

  10. @halitentwo: But now your "good reads" items link to posts with no content.

If you mean your text widget wouldn't retain your line and paragraph breaks, just check the option "Automatically add paragraphs". If you mean you wanted your list items to have little squares like in the other widgets, it can be done via some extra coding in the widget. If you want your list formatted some other way, that can also be done via coding. If you can find images for the book covers and want to display those images, that can be done too. Please decide and tell us what exactly you're looking for.

  11. Ok, I feel like an idiot... I'm not sure what I want. I've added some to the "pages" I've put on the sidebar. Of course they are showing up at the top of my blog and I don't want that. But the sidebar is looking more like I want it to. I basically want to keep a running list of books I've read and would recommend whereby you can see the list of titles and when you click on them you get either a link to amazon (or other place you can get/read the book) and a brief blurb about the book. Does that help you help me?

    Thanks
    h
