Simple "Last Location" map - wordpress.com friendly - also, route maps

  1. Hi folks,

I'm currently setting up my blog for my upcoming Round the World trip and have been Googling for ages for what I want, but for the life of me I can't find it.

I'd like a simple, very easy to update, WordPress.com friendly way to show a map of where I currently am in the sidebar. Can be a static map (such as those from Google Maps' Static Maps API) etc.

In addition, something to create a decent routemap (again, preferably on a Google Map) would also be helpful.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

    H

The blog I need help with is hpka.wordpress.com.

  2. Yes, unfortunately you can't use the dynamic maps on WordPress.com. The best you can do is link to a dynamic map on Google or another site, as you mentioned with a link or static map image in the sidebar.

  3. Does Platial not still work? I had to take it off, but it used to function this way.

  4. I'm kind of looking for something a little simpler than Platial (or Plazes for that matter).

For example, I need an easy way to update a small map such as the one generated when running this:
    http://maps.google.com/staticmap?zoom=5&size=200x200&markers=13.15237,102.201347,bluex&key=ABQIAAAA3Eu3fzzpXITryiLujUimbxTBZebdwazUor-LSYf-A5QsLzBRShQDAkIFCs85fOMxzUKT7F_0o8ABuQ

  5. If I were you I'd make a static image of it, and put it in the sidebar as a clickable link to the live map. I think that's the best we can do right now.

  6. Seems so

Also looks like I have a gap in the market here :P

If I were still running WordPress on my own webserver (i.e. wordpress.org style setup) I'd be writing this now.

Thanks for the help non the less everyone. Will let you know if I can think something up.

  8. Ah, I've probably not given the requirements very well. I need to be able to update it, very easily, from the road, possibly by texting or sending an email..

  9. I'm not understanding?
The google map embed does give you a dynamic link.
You can only put it on a page or a post, but whenever you change your Google map, the link will automatically update.

  10. Sorry.
Not link, the embed will automatically update.

  11. Also found this, if your mobile is GPS enabled.

(NAYY-I have no experience with that site.)

  12. Providing the link would have been a good idea. (embarrassed grin) http://gpsed.com/
