Site can't be accessed on multiple computers.

  1. thesmokeofpolitics.wordpress.com

Last night I created a free blog...nothing on it yet, but it's set up and ready to be customized and upload articles. However, the person who will be doing the blogging is unable to access the site on three different computers.

When he puts in the url for our blog, he gets the main wordpress.com screen to create your domain. It tells him that name is already taken but he can create a blog with the same name for $18 a yer.

Why can't he access the site by using the url: thesmokeofpolitics.wordpress.com?

How can there be two sites with the same name? He can't access what we set up last night that I can access, but it tells him he can create a paid blog ($18/yearly) with the same name.

FYI: we purchased the domain name thepoliticsofsmoke before we knew we could do all of this on WordPress.com. So we do own that domain name for any host site other than WordPress.

Please help us...this is making us nuts and since I'm not having that problem on my computer, I can't troubleshoot the issue.

    re: front page error message

    Nothing Found
It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.

By default the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. As soon as you publish a post not a page the error message will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

  7. Hi TT, I had not seen your answer.
    Good day to you. :)

  8. timethief...

Thanks for the links, they will be helpful. I was ready to hit the tutorial when I got a panic call from my friend that he couldn't access our site on three different computers. One still running XP, one running Win7 and one running Win8. But I can access it on both my desktop and laptop which is what is confusing.

I wasn't concerned about the error on the home page because I'm waiting to be given something to post. I'm setting the site up because I'm good with software, my friends will be the bloggers because they are technically challenged but politically knowledgeable. <s> All we wanted to do last night was get the basics set up so I could learn to use WordPress by doing the tutorial and get our blog going. Reading a manual wasn't working for me being unable to apply what I was reading.

I did click the box to notify me of any followup posts. If that isn't subscribing to the thread, would you tell me what I need to do?

And why when he goes to wordpress.com and enters our domain name, is he getting "name is taken but a paid account ($18/yearly) is available with the same name"?

I'm frustrated...all I wanted to do when I got up was to start the tutorial (also have WordPress for Dummies" book) so I could learn the software and they could start doing posts.

But while I have your attention, if we went to the $18/yearly blog, would our name still be thepoliticsofsmoke.wordpress.com or would it be thepoliticsofsmoke.com? We have purchased that domain name.

Thanks for your help. Having to learn so many new things so quickly and then having my friend notify me that he couldn't even access the site from three different computers, blew my learning plans out of the water.

Really appreciate you being here for us.

  9. Hi there!

Can you kindly clarify a few things for me?

I got a panic call from my friend that he couldn't access our site on three different computers.

Was he trying to access your blog at "thepoliticsofsmoke.wordpress.com" or "thepoliticsofsmoke.com"?

And why when he goes to wordpress.com and enters our domain name, is he getting "name is taken but a paid account ($18/yearly) is available with the same name"?

Am I correct in saying that your friend visited http://wordpress.com/ and attempted to sign up for a new blog? Since "thepoliticsofsmoke.wordpress.com" is already taken, an option to register the domain "thepoliticsofsmoke.com" for $18 was offered to him. This is part of the standard process of signing up for a new blog.

But while I have your attention, if we went to the $18/yearly blog, would our name still be thepoliticsofsmoke.wordpress.com or would it be thepoliticsofsmoke.com? We have purchased that domain name.

I'm not seeing the blog "thepoliticsofsmoke.wordpress.com" registered under your account. Did your friend happen to register it for you? If so, you may still use that address for your blog free of charge. Should you decide to use and register the domain "thepoliticsofsmoke.com" instead, that would cost $18 a year.

Looking forward to your answers! Thanks!

  10. Druesome...

I don't know how to put the quotes in the boxes like you did...do I use the /quote at the beginning and end or do I use close at the end? I'm just learning WordPress, doing a favor for a friend who wants to do a political blog but is technically challenged. Since years ago I used to design sites for fun with Dreamweaver, he assumes I can jump right in with WordPress.

After reacting to his panic call instead of thinking, (I am not a morning person...retirement means I can stay up late and sleep late) and posting my original post, I apologize that I took up everyone's time. I really didn't understand what he was saying. Once I was functioning and the cobwebs were cleared, I realized he had to be using an incorrect link (even though I'd sent him the link last night) and didn't understand domain names versus hosting services.

I sent him the link again and he had been using [email redacted] instead of the link I'd sent him last night. (He's 81, I need to practice patience with him.) Could have done without the morning panic call though. So that issue is resolved.

After I did some research, I realized that he was thinking he got the hosting services for $18, not the domain name. So that too is resolved although it took me a while to explain it to him after I figured out what he was talking about.

I do apologize for taking up everyone's time, but am certainly grateful to know there are folks who can help me when I get stuck...at this stage I'm pretty confused. Tomorrow I plan to do the tutorial and got WordPress for Dummies so I have a reference book.

So thanks to everyone who tried to help when I posted in my morning fog. He is so excited about this and we've been friends since the late 60s so I really want to make this blog possible for him.

I feel a bit foolish because once I was fully functioning, I knew he had to be using an incorrect link and it didn't take long to realize he was confusing a domain name with a hosting service. I was really winging it when I set this up last night. But I'll learn and he'll have a new toy to play with.

With gratitude for the wonderful folks willing to help newbies,
    Tatezi

  11. Where it says [email redacted] should have been thepoliticsofsmoke at WordPress.com.

  12. You're welcome! Glad you got things sorted out eventually. Happy blogging to both of you!
