acarobI made a little mistake. I wanted to set up a new blog using a blog name I had deleted. Is it at all possible to reset the availability of a site name that is not in use (it's my name)? Am I as clear as mud?

Hi. If you are referring to the portion before "wordpress.com" in your blog's address, sorry but the answer is no. Once you delete a blog, it's gone forever, and so is the address:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/You'll have to choose another another address or you can buy a domain name of your choice plus the domain mapping option:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/
