I am just putting together my website/blog with word press and I have marked everything private - how many I getting site visits or hits if everything is private?

Your own visits to a private blog are recorded and reflected in stats. Those who click the URL and see the protected blog long-in box and can go no further also create stats. http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/
