Skylark Featured Category links

  1. I posted this question in the Themes forum but got no response so I thought I'd repost it here.

    Hi: I am working with the customized Skylark theme to create a website, not really a blog. I have set up custom images down at the bottom of the home page using the Skylark Showcase template but I would like people to be able to click on them (for example the third image "Tools" and go to the same place they would reach by using the main navigation bar at the top for "Tools". This means my home page images would have to link to a Page not a Post. Is this possible?

    The blog I need help with is nmegan.wordpress.com.

  2. On some of the standard, non-responsive themes with a sidebar, I would suggest putting the images into the sidebar in text widgets and linking those images to the pages. We could then reposition those text widgets over and into the correct position, but this doesn't work cleanly with responsive designs, and besides, the showcase front page template in Skylark does not have a sidebar.

    What I would suggest is to create a category named whatever you want and then move the pages over and into posts and then set that category as the featured category. You could then link to those posts in the top navigation using a custom menu. The problem is, the portfolio is a page, not a post. You could use a gallery in a post though and style it to look very similar to the portfolio pages.

    You can activate the "posts" module on the Custom Menu page by selecting it in the screen options tab (top right on custom menu page).

  3. Thanks for your response! I think I understand what you're saying. You're suggesting that I take the content of the four items at the bottom of the home page and make them posts,not pages and then add enable and add them to the custom menu so that people go to the same page via the bottom image and the top nav menu. Am I understanding you correctly? If so, I can try that, although I'm reluctant to give up the Portfolio template which was one of the main reasons I chose this theme.

    What do you think of the idea of setting the bottom image to take you to a "Portfolio" post that then has links to a individual Portfolio template pages. And the main nav link could go direct to those page. I need to try the Portfolio template. I'm starting to think it might not have what I really need, which is one of those features where you click on an image and it enlarges right on the screen.

    So I tried what you suggested on the third home page image "Tools" and it appears to work, except is there a way to stop the title and post entry from showing below the image on the home page? I don't really want that. I just want them to click on the image and be taken to the post.

  5. Sure, the following CSS will hide the title and the entry summary on the main page.

    .home .category-section header, .home .category-section .entry-summary {
    display: none;
    }
  6. Thank you so much! Is there anyway I can send you some donuts? :-)

  7. Mmmm, donuts……………………….

    Wait! Concentrate!

    The fact that you offered is thanks enough, and you are very welcome. :)
