Slider - Use Pages vs. Posts? Video?

  1. I've been considering a switch to WP.com from a self hosted WP site and have been browsing the Premium themes in hopes of finding one that will allow for Pages to be displayed in a Slider on the front page.

    Everything that I've been able to find tells me this isn't possible for certain themes and others make no mention. I find this baffling and disappointing. =\

    The option for some themes to designate Posts, via setting them as a sticky, is great though not entirely helpful.

    Additionally, I'm looking for themes that allow for video to be displayed on the front page, whether it be in the Slider or elsewhere.

    These are common features in themes for self hosting. Am I missing something and/or is this something that anyone has found as a work around for these items?

    Many thanks for your thoughts and ideas.

    The blog I need help with is garyploski.wordpress.com.

  2. Hello,

    I do not believe that we offer a theme that allows pages to be displayed in a Featured Content Area. I can say for certain that there are no free themes that allow this, and with about 99% certainty that no premium themes do. This is an interesting request though and we'll definitely consider an implementation of this moving forward. Thanks for the suggestion!

    A couple of themes that should support video in a slider are:

    * http://sundancedemo.wordpress.com/
    * http://selectademo.wordpress.com/

    Hope this helps.

  3. If this becomes a possibility... I will change my recommendation to nearly everyone on how to host their website. It won't be a question anymore, I will simply direct them to WP.com

    If it is at all helpful, the sites I plan on migrating into one site on WP.com are (garyploski.com and casthim.com). At the present time they are running under one WP.org install and are common setups for actors and filmmakers.

    Thanks for the recommended themes. Sundance stood out to me as an option though I much prefer Portfolio and had high hopes a video could appear in the Slider. Obviously it does not presently allow such a setup.

    One last thing, I've been in conversation with Raanan about these ideas via email per the Enterprise announcement blog post.

    I'm going to trac this. I can imagine more than a few implementations where this could be beneficial. While I can't promise that it will get adopted, we will definitely consider it!

    No Problem, I found another (premium): http://gigawattdemo.wordpress.com/

    I completely understand. Please know that I am available to brainstorm or share examples of WP.org installations for people who are looking for less hassle (upgrades, security) so they can focus on content.

    The basic costs to move to WP.com for most would be minimal/year - close to the cost of a domain.

    Gigawatt looks great! Hrm. I wish there was a way to test a theme (even for an hour) before buying it.
