Some help with themes and home page please

  1. I've got a few questions for anyone in the know.

For a while now I've been wanting to have a fixed home page on my blog with four photo links to different pages,
for example 'modelling, portraits, art and live music'
I used to have this set up on my site but I can't work out how to do it on wordpress.
    Or even if its possible.

Does a post automatically have to go to the top of your page?
Can it be posted to a different page on my blog?

I dont really like the way its a huge long line of pictures.

  2. a fixed home page on my blog

How to set up a static home page. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

That being said I believe these entires will be useful. Staff have provided this support documentation entry for those who want to structure their blog like a website. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

What’s critical is to understand when creating a website structure is the following:

    1. The differences between pages and posts
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

    2. The impact of choosing to restruture a blog to become page based

    3. We organize our posts by use of categories. There is only one dynamic page in a blog and we cannot post to more that one page. However, we can create the appearance that we have done that by setting up a custom menu and displaying Categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation menu. Instructions > custom menus > http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

  3. Does a post automatically have to go to the top of your page?

Readers come to read fresh content. Yes all blogs are structured to display posts in reverse chronological order and this cannot be changed unless you want a book-like structure. http://en.support.wordpress.com/write-a-book/

Can it be posted to a different page on my blog?

See the entry I posted the link to above on creating a static front page. All blogs are structured for post to display on the front page of the blog. When you create a static front page you can assign another page you create to be the page that displays your posts. > Settings > Reading

  4. I dont really like the way its a huge long line of pictures.

Please read this section of the support documentation on how to align your images in your posts and pages by use of text wrapping. http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-alignment/

  5. thanks a lot timethief.
In this case you haven't stolen any but rather saved me a lot. ;)
