Some questions on blog transfer within WordPress

  1. Hello,

I am thinking of transfering my blog to another location on WordPress. I have already created the new blog, i.e. signed up for the name, picked a theme, created extra pages.

Just wanted some info on how the whole transfer works. What gets transfered and what doesn't? Is it only my posts and comments under them that get transfered? Or does the whole format, theme, pages of the old blog move over to the new space? What if my new blog has more pages than the original that I want to transfer? Will the pages in the new blog stay?

I hope my questions are clear. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

The blog I need help with is sunshineintentions.wordpress.com.

  2. Only the content can be transferred.

Your post is vague when it comes to saying if you are referring to transferring between WordPress.com blogs or if you mean transferring to a WordPress.org install.

For the former see > http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-between-wordpress-com-blogs

For the latter a brief summary of the steps follows.

To move your content you need to create an XML export file of your content. It will not include the theme as they cannot be exported. See 3 below.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
    http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    1. Hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/

    2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
    http://wordpress.org/themes/
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/

    3. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.

    4. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ or if you have domain mapping then update the nameservers http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/

    5. Transfer subscribers and stats. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/

Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

  3. Thank you, Timethief.
I am not a very technical person, so i suspected my question might not be very clear. My intention is only to move between wordpress.com blogs. I struggled to come up with a name before starting the blog. So I just started hoping that the name would find me along the way. Which it did. Thus, I just want to change the name of the blog and move to a different address.

So, if I understand correctly, only my posts and comments will move, right? I will have to specifically ask the WordPress team to move my subscribers list and the pages that I already have on the new blog will remain intact, even though they do not exist on the old blog?

    That's correct.

  5. Thank you! I have read those two pages. Just wanted to make sure that I understood the information correctly.
Sounds simple enough. Hopefully, I don' mess anything up.

    Thanks again!

  6. One more quick question.
What happens to the content on the old blog? Does it get moved from the old blog, or only copied and pasted to the new blog? There are a few posts that still generate some traffic because somebody else has linked to them. I wonder wil lthe people following these links still find something or will all the content be gone to the new blog?..

  7. The content in the "old" blog remains where it is because when you make an XML export file it's only a copy.
For moving your subscribers Staff can do that for you.
