My blog, which usually gets 100-200 hits per day, today had over 1000, almost all apparently from the search term "tan fern plants." The new feature showing unique visitors, though, tells me I only had 28 unique people today, which is actually lower than normal for me. Can anyone give me some insight into what could be going on? Is this some sort of spam?

That's consistent with the changes Google Images have made. Clearly, you google lightly for an image like that somehow, and I believe what this might reflect is that Google Image Search is one "person" as long as the person doesn't click through to see the blog page.
"Highly" not "lightly" duh. I need more coffee.

Raincoaster - that's interesting, but it doesn't really explain why I suddenly got 10x as many hits as normal. Or does it? Am I missing something? This all happened over about a three hour time span and then my traffic went back to normal.
If you're on the front page of a Google Image search yes, it does. When they make a change it causes a lot of chaos as they tweak it, so it's possible that this is the cause. Of course, it's possible it's something else, but what?

Our stats system worked as designed in this case, correctly counting the clicks to your site. It occasionally happens that your stats are an evidence of a glitch elsewhere on the internet.
